Holly Hill was a small town in Putnam County, Florida, from the early 1800s until the late 1920s. It was located on the Putnam River and was one of only a few places in Florida that remained rural during the 20th century. Holly Hill is now a ghost town and is located about an hour's drive from Tampa. The first people to live in Holly Hill were white settlers who arrived in 1818. They built homes on what is now known as Indian Road. The next year, they founded a Methodist church, which quickly became active in the community. In 1824, two men named Joshua and John Smith settled in Holly Hill and started trading goods with local tribes such as the Seminoles. They also built a house on Indian Road which served as both their home and office. In 1827, three brothers named George Washington Dixon bought land around Holly Hill for $2 per acre. They began to farm it and soon created a village by building stores, churches, schools, and other buildings around their farmstead called Dixonville. The first post office opened in 1830; however, it closed within two years because of lack of customers (the residents had no mail). In 1835-36, Daniel Boone came through Holly Hill on his way to pursue his destiny as an explorationist across North America. While he was hereabouts he met some of his future friends including William Hernando de Soto (who would go on to conquer Florida), whom Boone introduced himself to at Dixonville while giving horseback rides around the area for guests of his farmsteads back then called "Dixonville Plantation". For several months De Soto stayed with Boone at Dixonville before continuing northward into Canada where he discovered more than 4000 miles of new territory! After reaching Montreal he sent word back south that he’d found “a great country”! All this activity attracted attention from various lands seekers who started coming by coachload all over Florida looking for virgin land! Some may have even been hoaxers looking for grants or payments! When news got out that someone had found new property so richly endowed—and accessible only by boat—the prices went up exponentially! A group of Englishmen chartered HMS Resolution (later renamed HMS Enterprise) to explore this newly discovered coastline near what is now Clearwater Beach in July 1784 after hearing about its potential oil reserves from smugglers operating along nearby St Lucie Island.(1) On July 7th they set off downriver but due to high water levels stopped short just short of where present day Clearwater sits.(2) A year later they again set out but became lost en route making landfall near red beach eastside today's Anclote Key(3). Upon discovery these men reported findingroprietary oil fields worth millions upon millions sterling!! As captain John Thornton sailed back upstream they met stranded sailors ashore at night who turned out be friendly Indians fishing offshore…..all those stories could easily have ended there if not for one man…. Jefferson Randolph owned quite some landed interests including 400 acres adjacent to Clearwater Beach Hearst County Gulf Coast properties now known as Palm Coast Princess Islands
