In 1862, the first expansion of Holly Hill was completed with the construction of a new courthouse and jail. In 1868, a new school was built and in 1872, a post office was established. By 1900, Holly Hill had a population of approximately 1,000 people. The growth of Holly Hill continued through the years with various annexations and expansions until by 1910 there were over 4,000 people living in Holly Hill. The town went through another major expansion in the 1920s when it gained annexation from neighboring towns. Throughout its history, Holly Hill has been an agricultural community with significant contributions to both local agriculture and Florida's economy.Today, Holly Hill is still known for its produce including fruits and vegetables as well as meat and poultry products.
Holly Hill is a town in Hillsborough County, Florida, United States. The population was 1,542 at the 2010 census. Holly Hill is part of the Tampa–St Petersburg–Clearwater Metropolitan Statistical Area. Holly Hill was founded by surveyors in 1853 as a sawmill town on the east side of Hillsborough River. It became a resort town after being developed around an artificial lake and dam that were built to provide water for irrigation in the area. In 1907, the name was changed to Holly Hill after General John F. Kennedy's mother, who had been born there. In 2002, Holly Hill was merged into Tampa with other nearby towns to form the Tampa Bay Metro Area. The first residents of what would become Holly Hill were farmers who grew crops near their homes on small tractors pulled behind wagons or on horseback because there wasn't enough water available for large hoes or plows upriver from where they lived. By 1853, these farmers had moved out of their homes and settled down in larger villages along Hillsborough River due to timber shortages caused by deforestation in South America during the Gold Rush era. The first settlers arrived at what is now Holly Hill in 1853 and named it "New Town." As development continued at this site, people began calling themselves "Old Townners" since they lived close enough to be called upon when something important happened in neighborly disputes or village meetings (i E., accusations of witchcraft). In 1907, when two brothers by the name of Beazer bought 3/8ths interest in a mill on Bulls Bayou opposite present day Delmarva Drive and built Smithers Mill which processed lumber for local churches and businesses; soon thereafter other mills opened up throughout Hillsborough County bringing more jobs and prosperity to Old Towners! By 1912 over 20 mills operated within 4 miles of New Town making it one Of The mostesteld Towns In Florida! In 1932-1933 new plans were submitted proposing reclamation of Lake Wylie as an artificial reservoir for agricultural use but no action ensued until 1934 when Revd Dr Julius Neumann purchased property adjacent to present day I-4 & State Road 17 just south of Present Day Holly hill Rd.. After much discussion between Dr Neumann & local business leaders about developing this valuable land into a resort center with golf courses (& Spa), hospitals (& Nursing Home) & recreational areas suitable for tourists; approval finally came through with assistance from then Governor Sun Yat Sen allowing him& his wife Jacqueline To build An Artificial Resort Called Hilton Head Golf Club On This Property For Residents Of Tampa Bay Area only! With help From Our Local Mayor Charlie Hargrave We Built A Hotel Which Became One Of Americas Most Famous Hotels And Is Still Operated Today! It has been said that if It weren't For That Iconic Hotel Being Built InHDellwood Park By Captain Billy Bowden Back In1920 Our Current City Would Not Be What It Is Today… So Thank You Captain Billy For Bringing My Family ToHDellwood park And Making HDellwood Park What It Is today! Holly Hill was a small town in Palm Beach County, Florida, until the early 20th century. The name Holly Hill is derived from the old Spanish name for this type of tree - "hiria". The first settlers in what is now Holly Hill were Spanish-speaking Indian traders and their families who arrived around 1795. By 1825, Holly Hill had a population of 100 people. The first school in Holly Hill was built in 1827 by farmers Robert Denton and his wife Deborah. It was not until 1892 that the first school building became available for use as a public school. From its inception, the local community Supported Education through Calvary Chapel (later First Baptist Church). In 1865, Reverend John Wesley Gore established Methodist Episcopal Zion Chapel on West Main Street which soon became one of the largest Methodist churches west of Louisville, Kentucky. In 1902, Dr. William Wertheimer moved to Pinecrest from Jacksonville to start Wernher's Polyclinic and Hospital which would become one of America's leading medical facilities with over 240 beds at its peak during World War I. In 1923 Major General James L Moore ordered construction on a large airfield to be begun immediately adjacent to town limits; this airfield would become known as Miracle Field after United States Air Force pilots flying crashes there during World War II found miraculous cures for their wounds! In 1942, when Japan attacked Pearl Harbor, much of Palm Beach County woke up to find open fields filled with munitions dumps and other storage sites across from their homes; many residents never saw again due to aerial bombardment that destroyed most populated areas within minutes! For some residents who did escape unscathed or returned home just in time for dinner another bomb hit right overhead demolishing homes and businesses outright leaving little survivors behind but also giving them an appreciation for how easily life can change even in small towns like Holly Hill! After World War II ended things slowly started back up again with mercantile interests coming into play once more as Floridians geared themselves up for yet another recession only this time it wasn't good news as joblessness skyrocketed!! However all that changed when President George H Bush announced plans to build Interstate 95 through central Palm Beach County making Holly Hill finally prosper once again thanks largely to development along I-95!!! In 2007 Hurricane Jeb struck hard hitting parts of Florida causing extensive damage including loss of power and communication infrastructure throughout Volunteer County resulting in much Selective Demolition taking place along with losses estimated at $100 million!!! Despite these challenges lives continue unchanged here despite hurricanes Irma & Maria thru out 2018 bringing new hope but unfortunately no end in sight
