In spite of this success, however, some challenges remained until the late 1920s when new zoning laws restricted development in certain areas such as downtown due to concerns about traffic congestion. Holly Hill was a small, unincorporated community in Polk County, Florida, located on the east bank of the Apalachicola River. The population was reported as 9 in 1920 and 5 in 1930; it decreased to 2 in 1940. Holly Hill is now part of Live Oak City. The first record of Holly Hill exists from 1827 when French Louisiana landowner Pierre-Jacques Lafitte chartered a ferryboat called "Holly" transporting goods between Baton Rouge and Mobile Bay. In 1840, James Troup (1810-1868), one of the founders of Tampa, purchased some adjacent land at what is now known as Holly Hill for $135 dollars. The name "Holly" came from a local tree that afforded good shade during summertime. This plantation house still stands today and is used as a museum by the Town of Live Oak City Department of Cultural Affairs. The original two houses were replaced with three more around 1870 due to increased demand for housing within town limits; however, only one remains standing today. In 1875, about sixty families comprising about 350 people lived on Holly Hill plantations including those owned by Lafitte Brothers along with others such as Ewing & Andrews cotton ginners and Hogg & Worth steamboats owners; these families are testified by oral history interviews conducted over many years by residents who recall their lives back then. Many members of this large plantation family remain living Generations later still maintaining close relationships with their ancestors/landowners which has helped keep contact alive among descendants living throughout America today! By 1900 there were just ten families left on Holly Hill plantations but all had passed away except one man who had emigrated to Texas some time prior to that date! Furthermore after World War I ended most plantations were sold off or abandoned and all traces of these once mighty estates have since disappeared save for photographs and memory impressions remaining behind in our minds’! Today we can revisit HollyHill thanks to restoration work done by Live Oak City Department Of Cultural Affairs which began in 2006 -2010 under the guidance of Mayor Bobby Dillard –an elected official dedicated to preserving our history & culture! Our city government took an active role in orders given through our preservation office&ostensibly taking careof things like coordination with state agencies who also play an important roleinpreserving cultural heritage places throughout Florida.–thus providing uswith valuable insight into how cultural heritage can be exhibited & shared both locally & nationally
Holly Hill was a small town in Polk County, Florida, until the early 20th century. The first settler in Holly Hill was John Wesley Hardesty. He arrived in 1837 and started a cotton plantation. In 1881, the name of the town was changed to Holly Hill after Mrs. Anna A. Haley, widow of Colonel James Haley.
