Holly Hill is a small town located in Putnam County, Florida, United States. It was one of the few towns in Putnam County that did not become part of the Seminole Nation after it was acquired by the United States in 1813. The town's name comes from the Holly family who built a cabin there in 1814-15. The first settler in Holly Hill was John Lovell, who arrived around 1795. He and his wife Genevieve (née Oldham) founded a log cabin on current-day Route 66 near what is now State Road 10A/64B. After years of hard work building their Cabin, they were met with much opposition from neighboring farmers who saw nothing but wilderness before them and wanted to build larger homes. In 1818, Lovell sold his land to Levin Copley for $2 per acre ($40 at today's values). In 1865, Samuel Morse donated land to put up a school for children in Holly Hill after he discovered an abundance of oil shale near Gainesville proper. By 1870, there were over 100 residents living in Holly Hill and its surrounding areas including present day Putnam County; however it would only be incorporated as a village on December 3rd of that year when all of the nearby settlements became one entity under the name “Holly Hill” through resolutions passed by the Board of Commissioners. The early days were difficult for residents as lack of water and space hampered agricultural development and most inhabitants relied upon hunting and fishing for their sustenance which often meant waiting long periods without food or water while awaiting permission to gather any type of fruit or animal off public land. With limited access to education opportunities available until well into the 20th century due to prohibition laws at that time, many citizens worked as sharecroppers or farmhands within local businesses during this period; however some enteredprising individuals took advantage of new technology such as radio amateurs that allowed communication between villages throughout those times thereby providing social services such as welfare checks and other important community information without ever having to leave their homes In 1933-34 HHH established itself as an accredited high school offering classes six mornings per week plus two afternoon classes each session Monday thru Friday from 9am - 4pm sharp . Classes began September 5th 1933 with Miss Florence Ladd taking charge… Mrs Emmeline London provided additional instruction Tuesdays thru Thursdays during class hours…. Mrs Emma Jane Kapp came aboard Fall 1935….. Our doors opened wider than ever before when Mr &Mrs Clyde Herring endowed us with our own hallowed ground…. In 1938 Drusilla Gittens assumed her position delivering programs twice weekly… Our lovely auditorium seating 1400 proved too small so we added more seats & enlargedstage octagon style window surmounted by beautiful stained glass windows…… This made all the difference when our students started visiting from all over! We had almost 4000+ alumni serving our community through various positions both inside & outside government After World War II ended hostilities ceased between America and Great Britain allowing Floridians unrestricted access to open markets henceforth known as “the open door era” which saw increased business activity due largely to people looking for cheaper labor than being homegrown employees within businesses . However despite these positive changes endeavoring homeowners continued to face challenges like poor infrastructure (roads still needed improvement), scant availability (of affordable housing)& unreliable power supply making life difficult especially considering increases tuition rates during this time……………………………………………………………..
Holly Hill was founded in 1875 by the father of one of Florida's first farmers, J.E.C. Holly. The name comes from a small plantation near present-day Jacksonville that owned Holly Hill. The plantation was later sold to Edwin Moseley and his family who resided there until 1893 when it passed into the hands of Jesse Burch and his heirs who still live on the property today. In 1901, Hobe Sound Electric Railway completed its line through Holly Hill and began service to Jacksonville which made it possible for people living in the area to enjoy good quality water privileges and access to fishing, hunting, and other outdoor activities.
