As word spread about this unusual activity, more and more people began to come to Boggs’ farm to buy his eggs. Soon enough, Holly Hill had its very own seagull market!

Holly Hill started as a family farmstead on a hill overlooking the bayous that now forms the village of Holly Hill. In 1892, A. C. Slater moved his cotton gin and mill from nearby Moultrie to Holly Hill after finding better prices for cotton here than in cane country to the north. The Slater family ran their business until it closed in 1948 when Arthur's father, James Gentry Slater, passed away. After A.C.'s death, his two daughters took over operations of the business and kept it running until 1989 when it was sold to another family who retired from farming and continued to operate it as a grocery store before selling it again in 2006 to Jason Smith Jr., co-founder of Smith's restaurant chain which owns Holly Hill Village since 1994).
