Hialeah was founded on November 1, 1892 by Hernando Ponce de León as a town in what is now Overtown neighbourhood of Miami. The name "Hialeah" may be derived from the Indian word "hiawatha", meaning "borderland." A post office called Hialeah was established in 1894. The first wave of Spanish settlers arrived in this area during the early part of the 19th century and named it San Pedro de la Vega after Padre Francisco Xavier Valenzuela (1789–1852), an Augustinian friar who had been sent to Spain to serve as second parish priest for Doral. In 1823 Don José Antonio Rivera y Arellano granted land along State Road 7 near present day Wynwood Avenue to Francisco del Carmen Ciriaco for $1,000 (). On July 10, 1830 Alonso Martinez de Mena purchased two lots adjoining those acquired by Rivera y Arellano from José Antonio Romero y Cabrera for $2 per acre (). At that time there were only five families living here; within 50 years all but one had deserted or died out due to malaria and other epidemics which swept through Cuba during that time period. By 1860 there were over 100 inhabitants here. In 1865 Hidalgo de Castro moved his artillery company from Havana to Biscayne Bay and set up camp on Fort Moultrie Hill northeast of downtown as part of preparations for an invasion by Mexico led by General Santa Anna.. Soon afterwards he became Mayor of Havana and decided that Hialeah should become his new capital because it had more people than any other Cuban town outside Havana proper. He ordered construction of the Giraldo House (now known as City Hall) on Northwest Third Street between Eighth Avenue and Western Boulevard on April 6, 1865; it was finished three months later on October 3rd(). He also appointed Manuel Fraga y Herrera mayor advisor with responsibility for public works including education and irrigation systems.. Fraga directed construction of what are now Miami Beach Memorial Stadium (then known as Washington Park) adjacent to Government Center where today's Brickell Forum complex stands; Fraga also laid out Fourth Street between Fifth Avenue and Seventh Avenue which forms today's Financial District boundary line between DowntownMiami and MidtownMiami.. In 1868 Fraga also erected what are now Flagler Place southwest corner Fourth Street/ NW Second Ave., across from then current Day Care Center - located at: 241 NSE 4th St.- complete with red brick facade typical for Spanish- era buildings nearNW corner flagler place east side before future University Drive extending back northward from then property line
