Hialeah is a city in Miami-Dade County, Florida, United States. The population was 1,567 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Miami–Ft. Lauderdale–Boca Raton Metropolitan Statistical Area. The city has been inhabited by Aboriginal people for more than 350 years and Spanish colonists arrived in 1565. In 1821 Hialeah was named after Hieronymus Bischofswerder, Bishop of Osnabruck in Germany and its first mayor was James Auld (1823-27). The early history of Hialeah may be related to the Seminole Wars between Spain and Native Americans. Juan Ponce de León discovered Hialeah Bay on October 7, 1513 while sailing from Puerto Rico with his fleet of three shipswrecked off Florida's Sebastian Key Peninsula; he called it La Isla de Cuba (Island of Cuba). After landing here on Christmas day 1514, Ponce became confused about what he had found and thought he had landed on an Isrealic island instead of Hispaniola (the present-day Haiti). He turned back soon after disembarking due to strong winds which drove him ashore on Honda Island in today's Everglades National Park. On reaching Honda Island, Ponce noticed that there were no trees or other vegetation as they are found around Havana, Cuba so he concluded that this must be Isreali land. In 1692 Portuguese explorer Pedro Fernandes Cabral sailed through the area searching for new routes to India but did not find any suitable landfall until June 17th when he sighted "a great mound rising out of the bay" known today as State Road 5 south of Hialeah Harbor; he determined it to be an uninhabited cape (); however his discovery led to Portugal claiming sovereignty over all parts of North America east of Mexico City ().
