Hialeah, Florida is a city in Miami-Dade County, Florida, United States. The population was 1,531 at the 2010 census. It is located on the southern edge of the Miami metropolitan area and is part of the Orlando–Kissimmee–Sanford Combined Statistical Area. The first Africans to arrive in what is now Hialeah were slaves brought over from Africa by one of Spain's governorates in 1795. By 1810 most of this African population had been freed and replaced by white settlers who founded a military post called Fort Myers (originally Spanish for "fuerte" or strong), within present-day Hialeah Park. The original town site was near present-day Biscayne Boulevard and Northwest First Street. A town meeting held on February 14, 1826 recommended that the name be changed to Hialeah because it seemed more consonant with Miami's Indian origins than Fort Myers which was then called "Fort Brooke". The first settler in what would become Hialeah was Captain John Dearborn who arrived with his family on June 15, 1827 from Pensacola, Florida as part of a group led by Major Jameson Hawkins. Dearborn established an agricultural community around what today is downtown Hialeah and developed an export trade with Cuba through his printing shop and warehouse along Northwest First Street until he sold out in 1841 to José Martínez y Marquez, who named it after himself: Martínez y Marquez City (later renamed Martínez de la Vega). In 1830 José Antonio Vargas purchased all of what would become Artesia Heights east of I-4 just north of US 27/US 301; Vargas donated this land to establish the first municipio – still extant – in Miami-Dade County. On November 3, 1840 Pedro Menéndez granted title to all lands within existence ceded him by Carlos Manrique de Lara y Margarita during their joint expedition against Seminole Indians under command of Governor Manuel Miranda y Costilla; thereafter both men are generally considered co-founder(s) or founders' fathers if no record exists showing otherwise. All legal titles including streets and other features designate these two individuals as Settlers #1 & #2 hereinbelow as such when referring thereto without any further notice... initially they resided primarily at Building 1 situated on northwest corner NW First St & NW Second Ave known then as Villa del Pueblo (currently home to Univision Communications Inc.) Hialeah, Florida is a city in Miami-Dade County, Florida, United States. The population was 33,546 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Miami–Ft. Lauderdale–Miami Beach Metropolitan Statistical Area. Hialeah has been known as "The City of palms" for its abundance of palm trees and other tropical plants. The name comes from the Pahokie word hiawalee which means 'place where there are many palmtrees'. The area now occupied by Hialeah was first inhabited by Huians who were expelled in A.D. 924 by the people of South China because they claimed to be descendants of Adam and Eve who had landed on earth on Mount Citrullus (Citrullus being one of the original names for Miami). In 1295 A.D., provisions were made for an Indian town in what is now Hialeah when it was leased to Malik ibn al-Nasir, governor ofbroward county from King Phillip II of Spain on condition that he should erect a cross upon Point Biscayne (now Biscayne Boulevard) and call it Medina Al-Ansariyah ('the Place Of The Cross'). Thereafter Medina became one of several towns located near Fort Santiago de Cuba on Key Largo Beach before finally becoming part of Hialeah in 1896 when it incorporated as a village under the name 'HIALEAH' with boundaries set off by that day's Plantation Road from present-day NE Fourth Street to SW First Avenue.' In 1892 William McKinney bought land east sideof Third Street between Southwest First Avenue and Northwest Second Avenue from John Sallis which included portions lying today withincity limits; this tract became known as McKinney Park Today's Northeast Fourth Street marks McKinney's purchase boundary with his heirs although some right-of-way remains subjectto future development extending WSW across Northwest Second Avenue into today's city limits.- At that time both McKinney Park and East Side Park lay withinthe boundaries established by Act No. 248, approved January 11th 1892 pursuant to an Order From The Secretary Of War dated December 15th preceding,- That order provided: '[T]he public works hereinafter mentioned shall be carried out at no cost to any person or property interested therein . . . .' In 1898 Jno Sallis sold land bounded north by Northwest Second Avenue (now NW 95th St.)and east by SW First Avenue (now SE 4th St.), southwestby I1st Ave., westby SW 2nd Ave.,and northwestby NW 3rd Ave., including parts lying today within city limits; this tract becameknown as Sallis Park Today's northeast fourth street marks Sallis' purchase boundary with his heirs although some right-of-way remains subjectto future development extending WSW across Northwest Second avenue into today's city Limits.- At that time both Sallis Park and East Side Park laywithinthe boundaries established by Act No. 248, approved January 11th 1892 pursuant to an Order From The Secretary Of War dated December 15th preceding,- That order provided: '[T]he public works hereinafter mentioned shall be carried out at no cost to any person or property interested therein . . ..' This act enabling citizens pay nothing for public improvements authorized constructionon lots owned either directly or through subscription arrangements chattel slavery having subsided since its abolition during [1865]- More than seventy years later still numerous privatelyowned parcels still remain undeveloped within citylimits while approximately eighty acres adjoining them has come under municipal control thru annexation resulting inthe creation OFHALAHEEN CITYWIDE PARKING LOTS AND PUBLIC ROAD PRESERVATION DISTRICT.' - After World War II developers redirected their attention awayfrom Palm Bay towards downtown Miami so muchso that little left behind in termsOf physical infrastructure Although nearly all streets withinCity Limits have been repaved over the past few decades new subdivisions have popped up along major thoroughfares such as NW 1st Ave & NW 5ThSt & NE 104TH St -Today only remnant remainingof ancient Hialeah neighborhoods such as Villalobos Blvd & E 17Th St are left visible insidecity limits while large tracts underlying these areas have become suburbanites
