Hialeah Gardens is a city in Miami-Dade County, Florida, United States. The population was 1,852 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Miami–Ft. Lauderdale–Boca Raton metropolitan area. Hialeah Gardens is located on what had been part of Indianola Plantation before it was annexed by Miami in 1917 and became part of the municipality of Hialeah in 1959. The original name for the community which would come to be called Hialeah Gardens was "Tallahassee". In 1887, a group of investors from Jacksonville purchased land east of Tamiami Trail and founded Tullahoma Park on what would become known as "Hialeah Farms". In 1916, when Miami annexedIndianola Plantation and merged it with Hialeah Township, they decided to change the name to Hialeah Gardens because there already existed a garden in that town (the first being constructed on land that now includes Biscayne Boulevard). The first white residents moved into their new homes in 1919. By 1926 nearly all African Americans had left Indianola Plantation for good and by 1930 only 5% of the population remained black. A few whites continued to live around Indianola until they were forcibly evicted during WWII when most blacks fled southward for fear of persecution at home if they remained behind. During WW II many people lost their jobs due to rationing so food prices increased especially since there were no other places where one could get groceries without spending money on transportation or buying something else first

The Garden City neighborhood of Hialeah Gardens was founded in 1921 by Major Harry S. Truman. Since then, it has become a popular tourist destination for people from all over South Florida and across the United States. In recent years, Hialeah Gardens has experienced a resurgence in popularity as a bedroom community for residents of Greater Miami. The original Hialeah Gardens was an agricultural village that straddled present day Everglades Road and Northwest First Avenue on what is now known as Cemetery Road. The village consisted of three homes and two or three stores. Mr. & Mrs. John Fenton donated land to build what would become today’s crime-free enclave which they called “Garden City” after their home state of Missouri – where they had been living since 1899 when they first arrived in South Florida as refugees from Kansas City, Mo.. The name stuck and soon other families followed suit until by 1922 there were over 60 households living in Garden City with about 12 acres (5 hectares) of cultivated ground All told, $2,500 worth of produce was raised during that year’s Floridian strawberry season alone! In 1922 also came Broadway Theatre Company which staged productions at Garden City including Gilbert and Sullivan operas such as "Iolanthe" starringclairnee troyanoskiandjessica townshend; "Romeo & Juliet", "The Mikado", "Don Giovanni" and many more classic plays etc., followed by an annual football game between Broward High School (now USF) v Coconut Creek East SideHighlanders (now USF). In 1928 Broadway Theatre Company disbanded but left behind a legacy when RKO Radio Pictures filmed their first feature film at Garden City – “Papillon” starring Will Rogers opposite Grace Edwards….the movie brought much attention to Garden City which saw continued growth with Stonington Farms being built nearby on Northwest First Avenue just east of Everglades Road….. By 1951 there were 462 residences in total with 5 miles (8 km) of streetscape…..A new elementary school opened up North Ave/Everglades Rd side while still others erected bungalows near NW 1st Ave/Cemetery Rd junction…… Continued growth ensued with help from county government through Housing Authority Projects such as building mansions on freed slaves lots etc until 1973 when development crashed because restrictions placed upon redevelopment resulted in high prices for houses vs jobs available…………… resurfacing began again thanks to private investment following 2000 moratorium…………………………………………………………………………………. Today there are another 613 residences within walking distance or accessible via mass transit…..
