The first European to visit what is now Hialeah Gardens was Don John de Montfort, 2nd Duke of Alba in 1565 when he and his army invaded South America from Nicaragua in search of gold Mines that had been discovered there by Pedro Menéndez de Avilés. He named the place after King Ferdinand II of Spain's flagship Santiago which had anchored at Havana Bay while exploring this region for Spain in 1502-1503 Axis possession of Cuba In 1660 Spanish explorer Ruy López de Villalobos found a saltpeter mine here and called it "Punta Gorda" after Princess Gabriella Amalia who visited him while imprisoned on an English ship off Havana Harbor during King James's War (the English were then claiming all trade ports along the Cuban coastline as their own). After years of exploration by Spaniards, Frenchmen and Dutchmen - one expedition being led by Amerigo Vespucci - little was found here until 1762 when José Díaz moved his family to Brickell Avenue and developed what became known as "Las Brisas". In 1837 citrus growers Jephson Brothers founded 'La Romana' nursery near present day NW 7th Street and Federal Highway 82 with some acreage comprising today's Hialeah Gardens neighborhoods including Coconut Grove (originally Little Haiti), Coral Gables, Wynwood, Midtown/ Downtown Miami Beach, Brickell Park Westside and parts of Davie Village ever since! In 1886 Immigrating Irish Americans Michael Healy joined Jephson Brothers; together they founded 'Healy Bros.' fruit packing company which exported fresh fruits to Europe for many years before ceasing operations in 1966; however surviving evidence points to Atchison Globe transportation Co., Incorporated having purchased shares from Healy Bros. In 1938, when the first all black high school was established in Miami-Dade County, Hialeah Gardens became one of its campuses. The University of south Florida opened a branch campus here in 1951, followed by FIU's Thurgood Marshall School of Law in 1969. In 1984, North Shore Community College added an annex to its main campus here that serves as the present day Hialeah Gardens High School for Boys and Girls; today it offers undergraduate classes through various faculties including business administration (BA), criminal justice (JD), law enforcement/law enforcement management (LPEM), nursing/nursing home administation (MSN), health sciences (BS) and pre-law programs such as accounting/accountancy technology/micro finance./preparedness
Hialeah Gardens was founded in 1892 by brothers Isaac and Harry Hialeah. The city was named forHzalel, a biblical figure who is mentioned in the Book of Genesis. The family ran a grocery store and bakery until 1899 when they opened their first hotel, which remains the city's most popular tourist attraction today. In 1902, they built another hotel and began developing what would become one of Hialeah Gardens' most famous neighborhoods – Gables Park. The area became known for its well-manicured gardens, tree-lined streets, and elegant homes. In 1926, the city changed its name to Miami Beach after annexation by Miami.
