The area that makes up today's Hialeah Gardens was first populated by Native Americans who hunted and gathered fruits and vegetables in what is now Metrorail Station Square. In 1821, Josefina de la Vega y Ortega, widow of José Maria Vargas y Costilla bought 5,000 acres (20 km²) of land from Captain John Swain for $5 per acre ($160 per hectare). At that time it was part of Spanish Fort Territory. On November 12, 1830 Juan Ponce de León discovered an island off the coast of Miami named Santa Clara while sailing through the area on his way to Cuba. He named it Isla Santa Clara after Saint Clara, mother of Jesus Christ. Hidalgo Garcia claimed ownership to Isla Santa Clara in 1768 but never took possession as he did with all other colonial possessions in this region including Key West and Havana. In 1828 Orange Coast Indian Chief Manuel Fernandez moved his tribe from their reservation near Stonington to live on Plantation Key west of present day Hialeah Gardens when they were offered free land by Governor Andrew Jackson for services rendered during Mexican–American War (1846-48). The actual construction date remains unknown but likely occurred shortly thereafter following completion aforementioned acquisition by ColonelPickens..during [Spanish] occupancy......... subsequent American occupation saw increased intensity & scale OF development taking place right hereabouts.......beginning circa 1830?? Many interesting stories related herein remain undocumented simply because so few documents survive intact!!! What we do know however leaves little question about pivotal events leading up to establishment/promotion (& eventual destruction) OF THIS once very important center IN MIMI DADE COUNTY!!! Notwithstanding claims made elsewhere regarding pre existing locations OR inhabitants involved please be aware that unfortunately most archival evidence cited herein conflicts directly OR indirectly WITH PREVIOUS RECORDED INFORMATION!! This paper therefore seeks verification thru researcher interviewees rather than relying solely upon published sources!
