Hialeah Gardens, Florida is a city in Miami-Dade County, Florida. The population was over 100,000 as of the 2010 census. It is part of the Miami metropolitan area and is located on the mouth of Everglades National Park. The name Hialeah comes from "Hiawatha" which means "the place across the river." Hialeah was originally called Englewood because it adjoined Englewood Plantation on Biscayne Bay. Hialeah Gardens was a plantation in Hialeah, Florida. It was founded by Colonel George Washington Key in 1820. The name of the plantation came from the word "hia" which means "high" and "nelah" which means "place." Colonel Key named the plantation after his wife, Genette Key. The first white people to live on the plantation were African Americans who worked as slaves. In 1861, during the American Civil War, Confederate forces captured and burned down the plantation. After the war, Colonel Key sold his share of the property to General James Longstreet for $8,000. General Longstreet used part of the money to build a military camp called Fort Pierce on one of Hialeah Gardens properties. In 1871, Captain John Ladd acquired half of Hialeah Gardens from General Longstreet and renamed it Herald Heights. Captain Ladd then began developing it into an amusement park called Herald Park which opened in 1875. From 1907 until 1917, Hialeah Garden also served as a training ground for United States Marines under Lieutenant Colonel Hiram Maxim. During World War II, many Japanese-Americans lived on Herald Heights during World War II because they were interned at Fort Brooke in Miami Beach while their homes were being built or remodeled for use as military barracks or concentration camps
