Hialeah Gardens is a city in Miami-Dade County, Florida, United States. The population was 1,648 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Miami–Ft. Lauderdale–Boca Raton metropolitan area. The name "Hialeah Gardens" was given to the community by Civil War General Philip Sheridan in 1881 because of its location on Hialeah Creek, just east of what is now downtown Hialeah. The present-day city was formed from parts of Hialeah and other Villages in 1922 when Miami-Dade County annexed portions of Indianola Heights and Belleair Beach communities. In 1933, Major League Baseball (MLB) created a new team in Miami and moved the Stroudsburg Senators to Hialeah Gardens as part of their original expansion program. The team played its first game at Hollywood Life Park on November 5, 1933. After several years playing at various venues around town, including home games at Marlins Park until 1955 and then again from 1957 to 1959 at Municipal Stadium before moving to Everglades Park for their final two seasons, the Senators played their last season in 1961 at Riverbend AME Church where they finished 2nd in the American Association with a record of 82-48 (.608). In 1965 MLB merged with Minor League Baseball which changed names to America's League and then World Series champion Baltimore Orioles before being sold by owner Joe Torre to Anheuser Busch for $2 million in 1966. That same year also saw the first professional basketball game ever played when New York Knicks assistant coach Mike Dunleavy led his men against local Packers affiliate Gulliver's Beach High School 49ers softball team 4 games to 3 during lunch hour on October 20th off Key Biscayne Boulevard near Fort Myers Beach Boulevard). At that time only major league baseball could support such an event so there were no costs associated with staging or hosting it thus giving basketball fans everywhere access!
