Hialeah Gardens is a city in Miami-Dade County, Florida, United States. The population was 34,253 as of the 2010 census. It is part of the Miami–Fort Lauderdale–Pompano Beach metropolitan area. The Hialeah Gardens community began to form in the early 1800s when Spanish colonists arrived in what is now Miami-Dade County. Early settlers named their town "Hialeah" after their home country, Spain. By 1835, however, the name had become associated with gambling and prostitution in the area. After several failed attempts at incorporation in that century, Hialeah Garden's first official settlement was established on November 7, 1884 by John Gorman and his family from New York City. The town derived its name from two nearby springs - Hialeah Springs (now known as Spring Hill) and Indian Creek - which served as its inspiration for its development as a residential community. In 1916 developers William Fenton and Harry Weems purchased land near Spring Hill Springs for an agricultural colony they called "Apalachicola". The colony failed within a year due to harsh conditions and disease; only 12 men survived out of a total membership of 30+. In 1920 Fenton again attempted to establish a town but this time with success: He sold 8 acres (3 hectares) of land at SW 71stStreet and NE 3rd Avenue to developer Atherton Leland for $1 million (). The new town quickly became popular because it offered easy access to Interstate 95 – just minutes away – as well as good schools and businesses. It soon boasted more than 1,000 homes; such amenities were not available in nearby Fort Lauderdale or Pompano Beach. After years of growth unchecked by developers or local officials, one incident led to another:On November 17th 1984 Kenneth Kappler detonated an explosive device inside his wife's bedroom while she slept during their honeymoon at Bally’s Resort & Casino; resulting in her death instantly which caused much public outcry throughout the city over lack of safety measures during major events like weddings held there.. This event also caused many residents to leave their homes moving into safer neighborhoods elsewhere within Miami-Dade County

This prohibition eventually ended in 1933 when President Franklin D Roosevelt signed an executive order allowing citizens over 21 years old to buy and use any rifle or shotgun without having it registered with the government (although it was still illegal to shoot unregistered guns). In 1936, Orville Ewing donated land for what would become One Park Boulevard which became one of the most popular thoroughfares in all of Miami-Dade County. The avenue has been renamed numerous times over the years includingOrlando Drive (1948) and Pembroke Avenue (1991). In 1990, One Park Boulevard was also designated as part of Uptown Miamis main commercial district by then Mayor Richard J. Daley and also received streetlights that year; making it one of only a few areas in Miamis downtown area where high-rise buildings still illuminated during night hours. In November 1964 Hurricane Andrew struck southern FL., causing extensive damage and displacing more than 200,000 people within its path including approximately 50% of Hialeah Gardens residents who were forced to leave their homes without any warning or opportunity for evacuation before nightfall on Sunday November 12th 1964 . Many homebuilders brought their construction projects to a standstill as they waited for word from authorities about what kind of assistance they would be given onceAndrew arrived . Swirling winds and heavy rain caused widespread flooding throughout much southeast FL., destroying thousands more homes than had been reported prior tothe storm . A curfew was put into effect throughout much southeastern FL., suspending most commerce until further notice on SundayNovember 12th 1964 , coinciding with Andrew’s landfall southbound just north of Orlando
Hialeah Gardens was once a thriving streetcar suburb of Miami. The area now known as Hialeah Gardens was developed in the early 20th century by developers, led by Scottish-born Hugh Mercer. In 1915, Mercer founded the Miami Manufacturing Company, one of the first large Shirtless Mills in South Florida. Mercer's company produced clothing for both American and international customers. The company also operated a film theater and a department store on Northwest Second Avenue in Hialeah Gardens. The development experienced rapid growth during the 1920s and 30s, thanks to its excellent transportation system and booming trade economy. By 1930, Hialeah Garden had over 100 housing units and 2,000 businesses including an insurance company, jeweler, restaurant, grocery store and many other shops. In 1933, when Hurricane Andrew struck Miami Dade County with catastrophic force, most of the buildings in Hialeah Gardens were destroyed or heavily damaged. However, mercurys steel mills continued to operate until they closed in 1988 due to economic recession. Today there are only remnant pieces of what once was a vibrant community that is home to many different types of people from around the world who visit everyday for their day-to-day lives."
