Hallandale Beach, Florida is a town in Broward County, Florida, United States. The population was 20,207 at the 2000 census. It is the county seat of Broward County. The namesake of Hallandale Beach is its longitude -0.83333333,-9.36750000, latitude 32°08'30"N, 8°05'00"W and it's located on the southern coast of Miami-Dade County, close to both Biscayne Bay andMiami International Airport. The name may also be derived from "Halifax," England where many people who immigrated to America during the early 1800s landed and began to develop Hallandale Beach as their new home. The area that would become Hallandale Beach was first settled by Native Americans in the late 17th century as part of what is now Miami-Dade County. In 1834 Spanish settlers arrived in what would become Hallandale Beach after being driven out of Cuba by American forces under General James Kenedy. They named their community Nueva Vida (New Life), after one of their number who had died during an expedition into Cuban territory which included parts of South Florida. By 1840 much of present-day Broward County had been acquired by the U.S., including what are now parts of Hallandale Beach and North Lauderdale districts; however, Nueva Vida continued to exist until 1850 when all but two acres were annexed by Fort Lauderdale and renamed Fort Lauderdale Heights for Major General James Wilkinson Haldimand (1784-1858). By 1912, whenHallandale Boulevard was built through the center of town it became one of South America’s busiest streets with shoppers coming from all over South Florida for shopping at local merchants like Sears Roebuck & Company and JCPenney Department Store. Hallandale Beach, Florida was founded in 1923 by J.D. Hall and his brother, Al. The first post office in the area was called "South Fort Myers." In 1925, the name of the town was changed to "Hallandale" after J.D.'s wife's family came from Hallandale County, Alabama. In 1928, a movie theater was built and named the "Majestic". In 1932, fire destroyed part of downtown and forced the re-building of the old courthouse as the first Hallandale Beach Mall. The mall became one of South Florida's most popular shopping areas with its large variety of stores including department stores such as Sears and Kmart; clothing retailers such as JCPenney and Best Buy; restaurants including Denny's, Chico's and Bennigan's; and an amusement park which opened in 1933 called "The Park", later renamed "Hollywood Park". In 1979, beachfront property on State Road A1A between First Street/Zig Zigzagging Boulevard (now known as Fourth Street) east to Third Street (now known as State Road 442) were annexed into Hallandale Beach by then- Mayor Artemas Ward among others who wanted to make it easier for tourists coming through town during wintertime since they no longer had to go east on ZIGZAGING Boulevard which led them off state road A1A onto private property owned by developer Donny Hathaway until it was ceded back to city ownership in 1984 when Hathaway sold all his land within city limits to former Mayor Artemas Ward Jr.; however city hall still uses third street address for purposes of mailing correspondence because that is where state road 442 leads out from town center). In 1990 voters passed a referendum authorizing annexation of portions of unincorporated Miami-Dade County northward along Okeechobee Boulevard (later renamed I-95), thus making Hallandale Beach part ofbroward county. On July 1st 1993 a new library building at 2200 NE Second St./State Road A1A became operational after years of planning following a gift from Mrs. Jane Plummer Huntley who also donated land for it at that location adjacent to her retirement home. On December 9th 1994 City Manager Larry Cavanaugh moved several departments out of their previous space on First Street near Second Avenue due largely to budget cuts but kept certain services such as public works & parks etc., moving into their new location provided they could find another suitable space within city limits outside Of Town Limits until permanent solutions could be found for those issues which included relocating Public Works Director Tom Spangler because he deemed himself indispensable withintown limits despite having no staff except him & 3 interns whereas now he reports directly to Library Director Rebecca Goodlett who oversees all day/night hrs library operations operates under contract withBrowardCountyLibrarySystem Inc., an agency sponsored by Broward County government
