The bridge spanned the river from Biscayne Bay to downtown Miami (then called Fort Lauderdale) and was one of the most important infrastructure projects ever completed in South Florida during that era; it also allowed easy access to shopping areas north of Downtown Miami which were then largely unserved by transportation other than walking or taking buses which served outlying neighborhoods such as Jupiter Village (now part of Kendall), Liberty City (now part of Miramar), Sunrise Boulevard/Hollywood Boulevard (now part of Hallandale Beach), etc. Up until this point all traffic coming into or leaving Broward County passed through Ft Lauderdale so this project was hailed as a great achievement not just for Broward but also for South Florida because much needed surface transportation opened up within commuting distance thereby reducing dependence on far away modes of transport like cars
