In 1971, Hallandale Beach developed its own municipal government with a mayor and six council members who serve staggered four-year terms. The town has since undergone several expansions, including annexing neighbouring communities Birdie Bayou and Coral Gables Estates in 2002, creating what is now known as the South Park district in 2006, and annexing Ft Lauderdale's Little Havana neighborhood in 2015
