It is a principal town of Hallandale Beach-Dania Beach combined statistical area, which had a population of 83,971 as of 2015. The rich history and culture that makes Hallandale Beach such an attractive place to live and work has made it one of the most popular tourist destinations in Florida. The first humans to live in what is now Hallandale Beach were Native American Miami tribe members who may have come from nearby Fort Lauderdale or Jupiter. A group of Englishmen known as the Graham brothers settled down on Biscayne Bay in 1821 and named their new settlement after General John Calkins's unit during the Seminole Wars fought against Spanish forces. In 1835, developers William Worth and James Sayers developed land north of Biscayne Boulevard on Southwest First Street for $2 million dollars. In 1859, they founded Worth & Sayers cotton gin on Miami's eastern edge with plans to process bales of cotton into fabric for export to England and Europe. However, when Confederate soldiers invaded America during the Civil War, they burned all anti-secessionist materials stored in this business including a model ship dismasted near today's intersection of Northwest First Street and Flagler Avenue (now Northeast 1st Street). The post office called "Miami" was established at this address on January 10, 1865; however it changed its name to "Hallahandale" on November 3rd that year due to confusion over similar sounding places around South Florida with similar names like "Hollywood". On July 30th 1889 local developer Fenton McCormick purchased 5 acres within what became today's downtown core from Worth & Sayers along Flagler Avenue between Northwest First Street and Northeast Second Street for $5 thousand dollars making Hallandale Beach his primary community center until he sold it twenty years later to Jules Leduc for $30 thousand dollars making it one of North America’s largest commercial areas immediately adjacent to major railroads with easy access by train either southbound or eastbound through downtown Jacksonville Landing/Hallandale Station (. . .) It wasn't until 1915 when developer Wm Hartsfield bought more property northeast along Northwest First Street from Leduc developing what would become tomorrow's Office Park complex including some world famous hotels like Regency Garden inn (renowned for its 24 hour bellboy service) Today’s Regency Park Hotel features both outdoor tennis courts used by locals as well as pools halls open 365 days per year hosting myriad events throughout the year including nearly every major music festival around! This period also saw considerable growth in nightlife with various dance hall raids taking place here nightly resulting in many early examples like Tampa’s “Tootsie Slide” fame! Not only did Hartsfield develop much modern day infrastructure here such as Taxicab services available 24/7 but he also financed some very interesting architecture such as Stonington (the original homebuilt resort town located just eastside Of present day Coral Gables) now part of Palm Springs Aerial Tramway right next door - having started off life serving primarily military people stationed there during World War II before eventually becoming an upscale retirement community! All told these developments led directly to Key West being born circa 1940 less than two miles away across Biscayne Boulevard
