The first white people to set foot on what is now Hallandale Beach were Spanish missionaries who founded a mission there in 1795. The town was named after Captain John Callahan who discovered it while exploring the Gulf Coast region during his explorations of 1805-1811. There are several theories about where Hallandale Beach originated - one suggests that it derives from an early Native American name meaning "place where waves crash." In 1835, James Kopp established Kopp's Store on Southeastern Boulevard which became one of the largest stores in South Florida. In 1884, Captains Thomas J. Howland and George Maney bought land at what is now Northeast Fourth Street and developed it into what is today known as Kopp's Landing. This development included many structures still standing such as Howland House (now a museum), Pompano Beach Pier and US 1/SR 192 interchangestreets near present day Hallandale Boulevard intersection. In 1907, Commodore William Halsey built Fort Hill on high ground overlooking both Pompano Beach and Lauderdale Lakes with its own steam engine for storage purposes; this fort served as headquarters for U.S Forces Southwest Asia until 1971 when they moved to Bahrain pursuant to an agreement between America and Saudi Arabia following World War II). In 1927, Harry Bendix opened Bendix Aviation (later Boeing) hangar #2 on Northwest First Avenue just east of Fort Hill Road which became one of Jacksonville's leading aviation companies during the 1920s and 1930s; he also operated a grocery store at 704 Southeast First Avenue until his death in 1944). On November 15th 1929 local businessmen led by Mayor Fenton purchased 2 lots north along Northeast Fourth Street from Commodore Wm Halsey for $5,000 () which would become known as Veterans Park (). The park presently includes areas including streetscape including access roads northeast from NW 4th St., parks across NE Third Ave., athletic fields west from NE Third Ave., community center south from NE Third Ave., beachfront public restrooms east from NE Third Ave., library west from SE Second Ave.), several homes formerly belonging to Commodore Wm Halseal
Hallandale Beach is a city in Broward County, Florida, United States. The population was 44,463 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Miami metropolitan area and surrounds the University of Miami campus. The town began as a small cluster of fishing villages on the shores of Biscayne Bay. In 1892, Fenton Sims developed what would become Hallandale Beach with his brothers-in-law John Lipscomb and Wm. H. Clements; they leased land from Juan Ponce de Leon for $1 per year and built a wharf to service their boatloads of fishing bait brought down in canoes from Key West and Havana. The first store in town opened on May 1, 1893 by Mr. Lipscomb and Mr. Clements under the name "Hallandale". In 1886, Elisha Doss became one of the first white men to live in Hallandale Beach when he came ashore to purchase some land from local fishermen for $2 per acre (about .50 cents per square mile). He built a cabin near where he now stands on what is now Flagler Avenue North and named it "Doss' Cabin". On October 12th 1888 Samuel Sisson became one of the first residents when he moved into an old farmhouse on present day US 1 south of US 1 Bridge between Biscayne Boulevard and Southwest First Street which was later leased to Jno Moody who renamed it "Moody's Place". During World War II many Hallandale beach homeowners gave up their homes during the Florida Invasion because they were required by military authorities to leave their properties unoccupied while they were battleship yards or other active military installations in South Florida; however most returned home once hostilities ended. Although many people left after Pearl Harbor because they did not believe that Japan could attack America mainlandationally until after American forces had crushed them at Guadalcanal (October 7th 1942), most stayed until early 1945 when war termination orders arrived stating that all civilians must leave immediately or face summary execution should Japanese forces be discovered remaining behind Axis forces throughout Southeast Asia (including Thailand) - resulting in mass exodus across international borders beginning February 9th 1945 Hallsandalbeach went dark due to curfew restrictions imposed by military authorities effective February 11th 1945 as well as total blackout throughout much of South Florida following Japan's successful invasion and occupation including much within coastal Palm Beach County
