In 1916 Eben Upton founded Alcoa Metal Works here which became one of America's largest aluminum producers during World War I due to wartime production quotas set by President Woodrow Wilson; Upton also served as Mayor from 1923 until his death in 1941 In 1959 Miami-Dade County annexed most of unincorporated Citrus County including Haine City making it part of municipal government with a mayor and a council who had direct power over public works and schools while still retaining individual property rights Hainerd School District No 5operated out of what is now Coral Gables Elementary School from 1951 until it merged into Broward County Public Schools District #5 in 1984 In 1990s large housing developments were constructed throughout downtown area filling up much of what was once open space used for shopping or other commercial uses such as Shell Oil Refinery which closed down in 2001 causing many shops and businesses closure including: Sears Roebuck & Company (1951-2001), JCPenney (1896-2001), Macy’s Incorporated (1892-2001), Benetton Group (1983-2003) In 2006 Perdue Farms LLC closed its doors permanently leaving around 100 employees behind with no job prospects since they ceased operations less than 2 years after starting operations Governor Jeb Bush announced plans on February 14th 2006 to create a new statewide park within Everglades National Park that would include portions of downtown Haine City along with Aventura Mall being developed as part of the project creating some 1 million jobs across multiple industries within 3 decades
