The area that would become Haines City was settled by Seminole Indians in 1838. A post office called Haines City was established in 1843, and remained in operation until 1904. In 1907, the Miami and Erie Railroad built a line from Jacksonville to Haines City. The first store in town opened on Main Street in 1908. In 1912, the Miami-Erie Railroad constructed a branch line south to Umatilla which became known as "Umatilla Street". According to the United States Census Bureau, Haines City has a total area of , all land. As of the census of 2000, there were 10,507 people, 4,912 households, and 3,744 families residing in the city limits. The population density was 2,531/km² (855/mi²). There were 5,992 housing units at an average density of 909/km² (2,609/mi²). The racial makeup of the city was 98% White (92% European), 0% Native American or Alaska Native; 1% Asian; <1% Pacific Islander; 1% from other races; and 1% from two or more races. Haines City is a small town in Miami-Dade County, Florida, United States. The population was 3,824 at the 2010 census. Haines City is part of the Miami metropolitan area. The first inhabitants of what is now Haines City were Native American nations who hunted and fished in the area for centuries before settling in 1821 by Captain James A. Haines on land that he had acquired from the Seminole Nation. The area was named for James Haines' brother-in-law, John Pee Dee (1762–1836), who had become a British military officer during the Seminole Wars and later became one of Florida's first settlers. In 1835, John Pee Dee sold what is now downtown Haines City to Thomas J. Sprague for $1 million; Sprague renamed it "Spragueville". In 1855, President Pierce appointe Colonel Isaac Stevens as Commandant of Fort Brooke; Stevens developed Spragueville into a fortified community that served as an artillery depot and post garrison until 1861 when Fort Brooke was surrendered to Confederate forces during the American Civil War. Aftermath of war led to demographic change withinSpragueville with many residents moving away or becoming refugees due to violence and poverty wrought by Reconstruction Era policies throughout most of southern Florida which discriminated against African Americans amd Hispanics living in white areas. After Reconstruction ended following America's victory over Confederate General Robert E Lee at Appomattox Court House in 1865, many black Floridians moved into central and southern Florida while others relocated northward into Georgia and Alabama because of Jim Crow laws barring blacks from owning property or working south of Mason Dixon Line (the racial line that ran along present day Interstate 95 from Tampa to Jacksonville). This loss Of Property Rights accelerated gentrification processes among nonwhite communities throughout much of South Beach/Miami Dade County where all property values increased rapidly post-recession leading some poor people out onto streets & highways looking for affordable housing developments Elysian Fields & Coral Gables being some prime examples although not all properties suffered this fate due to market demand & affordable pre-existing homes/condos available nearby
The history of Haines City, Florida began with the arrival of white men in the area in the 1840s. The first European to set foot in what is now Haines City was French trader Antoine Le Moyne, who arrived on a ship called La Fayette in 1845. He and his wife, Marie-Anne Caron de la Motte, built a small cabin on a bluff overlooking the bay. In 1853, Major Anthony Wilkinson decided to settle this area and named it after Captain James Haines of HMS Discovery fame who had explored Florida earlier that year. After Wilkinson's death in 1865, his son-in-law John Waddell took over as manager of the town. In 1875, Waddell moved the town’s government from Ybor City to Haines City so that it could be more self-sufficient. One of Waddell’s goals was to provide education for local children and he purchased land at present day Grady High School for that purpose. By 1888, there were over 100 people living in Haines City. In 1916, during World War I, local businesses produced munitions for the war effort and many military personnel spent their days and nights in or around town. During World War II, many residents helped contribute to the war effort by working at different factories throughout southeast Florida; however, much of downtown city was destroyed by bombing raids conducted by American forces during Operation Torch on November 7th 1942
