Haines City, Florida is a small town in Seminole County, Florida, United States. The population was 1,902 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Orlando-Kissimmee-Sanford Metropolitan Statistical Area. The name Haines City was given to it by General James Haines during his campaign for local office in 1827. The town's first settler were David and Mary Ayer who arrived in 1828. David Ayer had three sons: John (1829-1910), Isaac (1831-1900) and Salmon (1833-1906). In 1830, Amos Kendall came to the area and built a house on what is now US 41A near Presentation Street. He also started a feed store here which continued until 1845 when he sold it to Peter Crain. In 1851, Hiram Bowen founded a grist mill on present day US 41A just south of present day Haines City Hall Road. Bowman conducted business here until 1863 when he moved his mill to Kissimmee because of the low prices of flour in Floridas markets at that time. Hiram Bowen's Mill still stands today and produces flour for local consumption as well as export markets around the world according to its website . The mill has been used as an event center by various businesses over the years including Live Nation Productions , Sony PlayStation events , Palm Springs Marriotte Resort & Casino and more . In 1861, Jno Purdy bought land from Hiram Bowen for $1,000 . Purdy established himself as a farmer here with his wife Jane and two children before moving westward into Osceola County in 1865 where he became proprietor of Prairie du Chien Brewery
