Haines City is a small town in Escambia County, Florida, United States. The population was 1,052 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Pensacola-Ft. Walton Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first European settlers in Haines City were Major James McKay and Captain George Rogers who arrived on October 16, 1814 from Stono Ferry in Newfoundland with 5 men and their boat "Cyrus". They named their new settlement after General John Haines who had led an American Expedition against Seminole Indians near Pensacola two years earlier. The original town site was located on what is now US-92 south of present day Haines City. In 1820 the town was moved to its present location when the Creek Nation ceded all of Escambia County to the United States following a treaty signed by President James Kenedy and Chief Tecumseh Biscuit at Tallahassee, Florida on August 12, 1820. A post office called Haines City was established in 1825, and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1902. The community began to grow rapidly due to the discovery of oil reserves along Putnam Beach Boulevard which became known as "Oil Town." A hotel and several businesses were built soon thereafter and during this time there were also several schools established including one for African Americans which operated from1829-1831 under guidance of Revs Jesse Fenton (a freedman) and Augustus Herrington (brother of abolitionist Lucy Maud College). In 1906 construction began on the first phase of what would become Pensacola Bayou Park which included an amusement park known as Majestic Gardens which opened May 9, 1907 with attendance topping 100,000 people for the first time ever; it remains one of Pensacola's most popular tourist attractions today. In 1915 a second amusement park called Mystic Lake opened adjacent to Majestic Gardens with attendance reaching 150,000 people again for just one day! In 1927 Pensacola Bayou Park contained both parks together making it one large park that still exists today though visitation has decreased over recent decades due largely to competition from other nearby attractions such as P deposits casino resort & Convention Center etc.. On November 10th 1938 Hurricane Andrew slammed into southern Florida killing almost 500 people including many residents of PensacolaBayouPark . Aftermath saw extensive damage across much of Fla but especially within Estero where nearly half way down bay front city limits entire block collapsed just feet from homes leaving scores homeless ..Many Scenic Byways throughout FL were closed off days after storm because so much debris lay everywhere however reopened about 2 weeks latermany SCENIC BYways remain closed off even today

In 1988, Haines City voters passed a referendum authorizing Mayor Harry Wirth to annex portions of Collier County into the city limits. As part of this annexation process, Haines City annexed 1/4 mile (0.8 km) ofCollier County Road 9A which connects Interstate 4 with downtown Miami on the eastern edge of town
