The Haines City, Florida area was first settled in 1837 by Captain John A. Haines. The community was named for him and his wife, Margaret Haines. In 1860, the town was renamed after General James B. Polk because he had been elected President of the United States that year. The population of Haines City grew rapidly during the early 19th century due to its location at the mouth of the Kissimmee River and its position as a transportation hub for settlers traveling between Tampa Bay and Jacksonville. By 1875, the town had a population of over 1,000 people and was home to a school, churches, churches of various denominations (Anglican, Methodist Episcopal, Congregationalist), a post office, a jail and several businesses. In 1886-1887 there was an unsuccessful attempt to build a phosphate mine in the town; this led to increased shipping traffic through Haines City which caused increased business opportunities for local residents. In 1907-1908 construction began on what is now Citrus County Memorial Stadium in downtown Haines City; this project became one ofthe most significant endeavors in downtown development during that time period. The stadium served as both a sports venue and social center for locals until it closed in 1966 due to budget cuts by then county manager Don Shoup; it reopened two years later but soon failed again due to financial problems). Construction finally ceased altogether in 1973 when Citrus County abandoned plans for any new development within city limits because of competitive pressures from neighboring communities that were developing faster thanHaine City could keep up with their growth rates. By 1980s,Haine City had slowly regained some lost ground and slowly began reclaiming some former commercial properties including the old school house which still stands today as part of First Baptist Church Complex (now known as The Habitat for Humanity HFAC). However much progress has been made since then less visible things like watermain replacement projects or infrastructure updates have not caught on like they should have done given how important those initiatives are seen by many residents who feel that without them little Progress has been made since 1978
Haines City, Florida is a small town located in Polk County, Florida. The population was 1,471 at the 2010 census and it is the county seat of Polk County. Haines City is bordered by Lake Okeechobee to the north, Starke to the east, and Clearwater to the south. Haines City was founded on December 2nd, 1892 by James Haines and his wife Fannie Burt Haines. The original home of James and Fannie Haines was a log cabin that they built on their property. In 1912, James' son John C. Haines donated land for a public library in Haines City. The First National Bank of Tampa opened its doors in 1913 in downtown Haine City. In 1922, local entrepreneurs formed the Association of Commerce and Industry (ACI). ACI became an organization that promoted growth within the community through education and marketing activities. In 1930, Jens Jensen started construction on what would become known as "The Mall." Jensen's mall would feature a variety of stores including banks, department stores, furniture stores, appliance stores and more! Today's Jens Jensen Department Store still stands at its original location within the core shopping district of downtownHaine City! In 1951-1952 Hurricane Andrew destroyed most of Jacksonville Beach which included much of central Florida including Haine City; however damage done to infrastructure such as schools made it difficult for many residents to return home until well aftericial relief had arrived in early November 1952 After Jacksonville Beach was recovered most citizens moved back into their homes while various businesses were relocated or closed due to lack of available space or simply economic recession during late 1950s & 1960s
