Haines City, Florida is an unincorporated community located in Levy County, Florida, United States. The population was 1,883 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Jacksonville metropolitan area. The community was founded by James Haines in 1887 as a post office and small trading town on the banks of the St. Johns River. In 1912 it became a borough and annexed by Jacksonville. In 1924 it became an independent city with its own mayor and council. On January 6, 1962, Haines City merged with Jacksonville to form a new city government called Jacksonville-Haines City incorporation. The economy of Haines City is based primarily on agriculture and fishing exports; however, some manufacturing activities are also present such as fabricated metal products and plastics products. In recent years there has been a growth in professional services such as law enforcement and accounting; although this sector still accounts for most jobs in the city overall.

Haines City is a small city located in Monroe County, Florida, United States. The population was 1,569 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Orlando–Kissimmee–Sanford Metropolitan Statistical Area. The land that makes up Haines City was first settled by the Apalachee people. The town was founded on December 14, 1867 by David Capps and James Fenton. In 1868 it passed from Fenton to Capps and then to Jeter. On May 3, 1886, Haines City became a county seat with the passage of legislation creating Monroe County from parts of Polk and Osceola counties. On November 2, 1892, Haines City was renamed for General Cornelius O'Hara Snively after he died in battle at Gettysburg during the American Civil War. General Snively had fought in several battles near Haines City before his death during the war on July 4th of that year while leading an attack against Confederate forces under General Robert E Lee at Petersburg Peninsula. In 1907, when Volusia County was created from portions of Broward and Orange counties, Haines City annexation went along with it as part of Volusia Township (later Dunnellon). In 1928 the name change back to Haines City as part of a larger renaming campaign initiated by then-Mayor John Witherspoon in order to improve its image following complaints about its reputation as a "slum" city among other things. The population increased rapidly during World War II due to military bases being located within or adjacent to the city limits including Fort Walton Beach Army Base which closed in 1961 and Fort Myers Army Base which opened in 1968 both serving as homeport for various Marine Corps divisions stationed there until their closure in 1989. Additionally Hurricane Andrew destroyed much of downtown Gainesville on September 12th 1992 killing more than fifty people making landfall near Jacksonville Beach prior to dissipating over Mexico Beach approximately seventy-five miles away just before dawn on September 15th 1992 becoming one of largest natural disasters ever recorded within US territory with an estimated $27 billionin damage throughout eastern Florida alone
Haines City was founded in 1868 by James Haines and his family. The city is named for John Haines, the father of James. In 1907, the city changed its name to Lakeland after a local water company donated land for the project. The original town site included only a few houses and a small grocery store. After years of development, the town grew rapidly, becoming an important center for cotton production and commerce. By 1920, the population had reached over 2,000 people and the city had started to develop into a major transportation hub on Florida's Gulf Coast. In 1928, Haines City was designated as the capital of Lakeland County by governor William Jennings Bryan.
