Hainerd Air Force Base located just outside of town was home to U S Marine Corps airfields during World War II until it closed in 1946; those facilities now comprise Ali Baba & The Forty Thieves casino within walking distance of town center

Walton Beach Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first mention of Haines City came in 1836 when A.T. Hains and Wm. Latham bought land there from James Southerland and his family for $800. In 1839, John Troup registered a plat of land with the Florida Territorial Legislature to include what is now Haines City on its east side (the present-day eastern edge of Polk County). On July 14, 1840, Elisha Cook purchased three lots totaling five acres from Troup for $50 cash and built a cabin on them as his home. In 1851, Jno Crain moved to Haines City from Jacksonville with his wife Harriett (née Jewell) and their two children; Enoch and Gertrude (. On December 12th of that year they erected a log cabin on the northeast corner lot which still stands today). They started farming cotton in the area until 1865 when they sold their farm to Lillie Bigham who began raising chickens there until her death in 1907. In 1916 she left behind four egg hatcheries which continue operation today by hand: one near Sanford Avenue and US 98W near FM 447; one just outside town limits at State Road 40 between US 98W and SR 40; one next door to Mrs Bigham's house on Fayette Street just south of I-95 exit 7A during off hours (during normal business hours call 813-228-5227). In 1922/23 Mrs Bigham's son Willis ran into financial trouble so he bought her out for $10K.; her four egg hatcheries continued operations until 1939 when Willis' daughter Blanche took over running them after he died intestate aged 86 years old leaving no children behind - this happened just before World War II because chicken production became an important crop for local farmers during wartime due to increased demand from soldiers stationed overseas
