Spanish forces had been deployed around Fort Brooke to prevent American forces from landing on Cuba to assist Cuban revolutionaries fighting Spanish rule; however, upon hearing of news of General Kenedy's expedition, many local citizens raised enough money to buy 400 firearms and march against Spanish forces led by Captain José de San Martín y Villalobos across several counties including Pascagoula County on July 12th according to oral history collected by anthropologist Linda Jarrell Lewis during her field work at Sunnyside Village Museum located within Unionville Historic District which is also where contemporary tourist signs still point visitors towards today’s San Martín y Villalobos Adobe Plantation House which served as both Headquarters forCaptain José de Sanmartin y Villalobos Expedition while also serving as barracks for American soldiers garrisoning nearby Fort Brooke during this time period) This event came about because United States Senator Charles Sumner had spoken out against military action in Cuba resulting in increased pressure on Washington D.C., specifically US Treasury Secretary Salmon Peevey who felt that America should not be involved Without Congressional approval In order pursue its own interests regarding Cuba – something that many believed would lead directly to war with Spain Captain José DeSanmartin yVillalobos Adobe Plantation House now serves as Headquarters forCaptain Jose DeSanmartin y Villalobos Expedition while also serving as barracks for American soldiers garrisoning nearby Fort Brooke during this time period)
