In 1850, Captain Haines donated land to make way for what is now Haines City High School. At that time it was one of only a few public schools in Seminole County and it served grades PreK through 8th grade until 1962 when it became an all-girls school known as Girls Academy of Tampa (GAT). In 1862, General Andrew Johnson ordered Union troops into Florida to suppress Confederate guerrilla forces under Colonel Troup; the resulting Battle of Gainesville forced Captains Haines and Fitzpatricks to flee their settlements east of Hillsborough River into Seminole County where they set up new homes on government land northwest of Gainesville on what is now Fort Pickens Island National Monument (the surrounding shoreline has been mostly destroyed by Hurricane Irma). After Johnson's victory over the Confederacy at Appomattox Court House in 1865, most whites moved out of Florida while some black slaves were brought over to work on plantations run by whiteowners after emancipation; most black residents remained living within GAT boundaries including during World War II when many veterans returned home as allies of America against Japan; however after the war ended many African Americans left town because there were no jobs available outside GAT boundaries or because they objected to white discrimination against them following Reconstruction which ended after Lincoln's assassination. 1/5/1962 - Today’s community timeline

On October 12th 1943 during World War II USS " Stackpole" located off shore at coordinates 90 degrees 59 minutes east longitude entered into submerged treasure trove concealed under coral while sailing near Key West Naval Air Station as an American merchantman and upon disembarking her crew discovering over $1 million worth of gold bullion coins containing Mexicanist Spanish stoneware and beautiful elaborately carved jaguar figurines they collected becoming one of history's largest treasure findings ever
