Haines City is a city in Monroe County, Florida, United States. The population was 5,827 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Jacksonville metropolitan area. The namesake Haines City was named for Admiral David Biddle Haines (1814-1892). The city was founded on May 1, 1881 by men from Gadsden and Mobile Counties who came to purchase land in what is now Monroe County. They numbered 108 souls when they arrived and soon grew into a population of 3,000 people. On February 12, 1886, the first post office in Haines City opened with Wm J Cook as its first carrier. A new courthouse and jail were built in 1892 and are still standing today; also built were a school (1904), Masonic Lodge No.1 (1910), Baptist Church (1912), grocery store/cafeteria/restaurant (1964), water tower/ pumping station (1965) and several churches over time: First Presbyterian Church(1986), Second Presbyterian Church(1987), Methodist Episcopal Church(1989-1998), Roman Catholic Apostolic Cathedral(1999-present). In 1955 the county acquired additional land east of town which created the current zoning district that allows for more farmland development within limits while still protecting downtown Haines City from being overwhelmed by growth or redevelopment projects such as strip malls and subdivisions along Interstate 95W which would have taken away much of its unique character. In 1978 construction began on what would become known as "The Water Tower" - an important civic building located adjacent to the present day American Legion Post #224 which serves as headquarters for both local government entities including police department, fire department and library services; restaurant; motel; banking business center; park & recreation area complete with fishing pier & beach access points etc., making it one of Jacksonville's most popular tourist destinations - annexing I-95W just south of downtown limits resulting in nearly doubling the size of town without losing any soul or commercial base A major event that took place during this time was "National Night Out" celebrated annually on October 9th featuring live entertainment throughout all areas including downtown with proceeds going back to various community organizations
