Gulfport is a city in Bay County, Florida, United States. The population was 16,898 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Jacksonville metropolitan area. Gulfport is the largest inland port on Pensacola Bay. The first Europeans to visit Gulfport were Spanish established in 1513 by Juan Ponce de León and his brother Pedro Fernandes Cabrillo. In 1855, cotton production began here when the Chilton Brothers ship "Albatross" brought 7,000 bales of cotton from Mobile Bay to be processed here by local people and machines. By 1880, this had become one of the world's leading cotton ports with its own mill and market place. The oil industry rapidly developed in Gulfport beginning in the 1930s with Permian Basin oil discoveries offshore (see Oil History of Gulfport). However, it would not until after World War II that major construction projects such as Interstate 10 (U.S.) would take hold there; instead, it became a bedroom community for Jacksonville residents until post-war development brought new jobs and growth to town center businesses including tourism and light industrial development during the late 1960s through early 1980s which transformed what was once an all-night shopping mall into one of America's great commercial corridors In recent years seawalls have been erected along both banks of Pensacola Bay to protect downtown from natural disasters like hurricanes or tidal waves due to global warming but much more needs to be done if Gulfport is going to remain an attractive destination for tourists as well as businesses seeking waterfront locations closer to Interstate 10 access

Gulfport is a small town in Gulf County, Florida, United States. The population was 1,752 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Pensacola-Ft. Walton Metropolitan Statistical Area. Gulfport was named for the gulf of Mexico which flows through its area. The first settlers in Gulfport were farmers and their families who arrived from Alabama in 1836. By 1840, the community had been renamed Pascagoula after French explorers who explored that coast during the 17th century. A wharf and landing place on the Stonington River gave rise to what is now known as "the Gullah Coast." In 1842, a depot was built on US 19 in order to provide transportation for goods arriving from Georgia and other parts of Southeast America via that route. In 1861, during American Civil War, Confederate forces burned all but three houses in what became known as "The Massacre." Governor Nimitz declared martial law and ordered Federal troops into action to quash any Rebel activity. Afterward, General Robert Eickhorn reported that he had seen no Rebels remaining within 10 miles (16 km) of Pascagoula; however Union troops found many dead or missing persons scattered throughout several plantations near Pascagoula. As a result of this event and others like it throughout coastal regions of Mississippi Valley occupied by Unionists during the war, Pascagoula quickly emerged as an insurgent center against Yankees - symbolized by local residents dressin' Confederate uniforms on election days - until 1865 when Union lines came down completely around Mobile Bay and Fort Morgan effective ending Reconstruction following Charleston's surrender four months earlier. When World War II began with Japan's attack upon Pearl Harbor on December 7 1941 (Hawaii Islands time), Gulfportians responded enthusiastically with patriotic displays such as raising Ulysses S.-Neale Grant flags from power plants across town while singing "We Are The Sons Of The American Revolution" (); manufacturing Liberty Bags; printing T-shirts reading "Gulf Port Is The Best Place To Be Alive"; selling items produced locally including cigars and canned goods;; collectibles such as postcards from outposts along the Pacific Rim; making candles using sugar cane grown near mouth of Stonington River. When Japanese forces landed ashore at Atchafalaya Bay on November 9 1942 ( falsely claiming to be liberating Americans held there), citizens mobilized early morning September 11th type operations called Marine Barracks Keyes Park taking advantage of available dark skies over Tampa Bay resulting in almost 100 killed including nearly 50% of men age 25 or younger (< ref target=”more headlines” />). Naval Air Station Clearwater Auxiliary Field also experienced widespread destruction with loss of life when Japanese bombers hit LCIs herein; USS Enterprise='s air wing based here destroyed more than 30 planesKamikaze missions< ref target=”more headlines” />In total more than 2,500 citizens were arrested or detained during World War II – some still incarcerated today.
