Gulfport, Florida has been a center of fishing and hunting since the early history of the United States. The city was founded on Pensacola Bay in 1819 by Spanish settlers and became an important port for shipping goods to and from Cuba. In 1861, during the American Civil War, Gulfport was the site of one of the bloodiest battles in US history when Confederate forces attacked Union soldiers at Fort Pickens. The battle resulted in over 100 fatalities and $5 million in damage. Today, Gulfport is a cultural powerhouse with significant businesses including Boeing Co., IBM, HP Pavilion & Area, BP Exploration & Production Inc., and Carnival Cruise Lines Ltd. The first scopes were designed for use in hunting deer or other game animals by European explorers and missionaries who discovered America's vast new land. By 1824, Indian traders had brought firearms to Gulfport from India and began selling them to local residents. By 1830, there were more than 50 gunsmiths operating in Gulfport alone manufacturing pistols, rifles, shotguns, ammunition, tools and other items used in hunting rifles and shotguns. In 1865, after years of negotiation between Spain (the original owner) and US representatives led by Abraham Lincoln,[1] Texas Annexed as a State within the United States created a need for scopes specifically designed for rifle shooting at long ranges using animal targets located beyond military fortifications like Fort Pickens outside Tampa Bay which protected what is now Tampa City limits[2]. It wasn’t until 1870 that veteran eye doctor George Dodd invented his firstoscope – an instrument that allowed users to see through objects such as glass – making it possible for hunters to track their quarry without ever having to leave their hideout! In 1912, JF Sutherland started selling telescopes at 601 Neches River Road in Gulfport. At this time, it was the only telescope store in town with an attached library! Sutherland's Scope Shop became one of the most important focal points for photography in Gulfport during the 1920s and 1930s as well! In 1937, JF Sutherland passed away leaving his scope shop and library to be operated jointly by his son-in-law WG Sutherland and grandson JR Sutherland until 1978 when they sold them both to HGC Scopes Incorporated! In 1978, HGC Scopes Incorporated changed its name to Gulf Coast Optics Company which remained in business until 1992 when it merged with Allied Telesis Corporation creating what is now known as American Scopes Industries (ASI). ASI continued operations until 2003 when it merged with Bushnell Instruments Company forming Bushnell & Associates Incorporated (B&A) which still operates today under that name!

In 1926, Congress passed legislation creating Escambia County; named for then-Governor of Escambia County James Peebles (1824-1912). The county seat was moved from Pensacola to Gulfport in 1927. In 1957, Ulysses S Grant Park was completed adjacent to present day Gulfport Naval Shipyard when it opened as a federal park with land donated by Commodore John Giannini (1799-1864), United States Coast Guard commodore during the Mexican–American War who later served as governor of Florida from 1907 to 1911 and again from 1917 to 1921.
