The port of Gulfport was founded by Dutchman Nicholas van der Bergh in 1605 as a means to get goods from Spanish America to Europe cheaper than sailing around Cape Horn. In 1837, John Sibley opened what is now known as Sibley's Store, which became one of the principal commercial businesses in town. The first courthouse in Gulfport was built in 1868 and it continued to be used until 1935 when it was replaced with a more modern building. In 1907, A&P grocery store opened adjacent to what is now known as the old brick courthouse square. This led to what is today known as "The GAP" where many local businesses have their headquarters. Today, much of downtown Gulfport consists of warehouses and other business properties that have been abandoned or are used for housing and retail services such as parking lots and grocery stores. Black had strong connections with both Republican Party leaders (and future US Presidents) George HW Bush and Richard Nixon because he helped distribute arms components during World War II for those two men's campaigns against Nazi Germany.Black also served several terms on the board of directors for Miami-Dade County after leaving his ammo distributorship business; he will always be remembered for his role in helping make sure that firearms were not seized during potential law enforcement operations unrelated to crime (a practice still employed by certain departments today).

The City of Gulfport was founded in 1871 by blockade runners who used the port to supply their ships with goods that they were selling off on the high seas. The city grew rapidly after World War II when new manufacturing plants were built there and today it is one of the most important economic nodes in Southwest Florida. It has a rich maritime history dating back to before European exploration started exploring the region for trade. In 1898, Captain John D. Sibley discovered oil rigs offshore from present-day Gulfport when he sailed his ship USS Drumheller into what would become known as “the Golden Age of Petroleum Exploration”. This period saw many large finds including those made at Belle Isle by industrialist J P Morgan and also off Key Largo by Shell Oil Company (now ExxonMobil). The Port of Gulfport played an important role during both World Wars I and II due to its location near Tampa Bay and its ability to handle munitions, food, gasoline and other military supplies needed for combat troops across all theaters of war. After the wars ended, major productions came roaring back such as aerospace manufacturer Lockheed Martin which began making Champions planes in 1948 while Fiat produced some of America’s first cars at this same port. Many companies left or moved away after that but then again nearly fifty years later US Steel Corporation returned with plans to build a massive steel mill next door only for a devastating tornado strike to take out most of town killing more than 500 people – still one of Jacksonville’s biggest tragedies (and my personal favorite!). But even during these tough times there were always flashes of hope here in Gulfport thanks to entrepreneurs like city planner Don Reid who envisioned a thriving center full of jobs, housing options, education opportunities and retail stores serving the surrounding communities – something that still exists today despite some rough patches (like Hurricane Irma hitting last year). And although we have seen challenges throughout our history like Hurricane Michael causing extensive damage just south of town last year – overall things are looking up!
