Gulfport is a town located in the Miami-Dade County, Florida area. The population was 232 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Miami-Dade County and home to the University of Miami. The city of Gulfport was founded in 1884 by John A. Ladd and named for him. The first settlers were attracted to land that had been offered to them by Major General James Hogg on his Treaty of Paris following America's victory over Mexico in 1848. Ladd acquired 1,000 acres (500 ha) of this land from Hogg in 1885, making it one of the largest tracts ever given away in territorial Florida. In 1886, he donated 5 blocks (20 acres) to build what would become Gulfport's first courthouse and jail on Bay Street between Harrison and Montero Streets In 1907, Hurricane Andrew destroyed part of downtown Gulfport with destructive winds up to 130 mph (215 km/h). The damage done was so extensive that only about 50% of old buildings remained standing after more than a year's reconstruction effort According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of , all land. Sligh as part of the Plantation of Jacksonville. The first post office in Gulfport was established on December 5, 1836. On January 1, 1907, Gulfport became a city under the leadership of Mayor J.C. Hardesty and City Council member James Poulter. In 1974, Gulfport merged with Mobile to form Mobile-Gulfport combined city government which still exists today as one municipality within Duval County. The history of Gulfport goes back over 350 years; its beginnings can be traced back to when Captain John D Sligh founded Jacksonville on November 3rd, 1835 along with his family and other settlers from England who were seeking a new home in America after escaping bad times during the Napoleonic Wars. This small town would grow quickly into one of America’s most important ports due to its location at the mouth of Tampa Bay and its access to bothland and water resources which made it an ideal place to ship goods and passengers across this vast body of water. In 1907, when Gulfport merged with Mobile to form Mobile-Gulfport Combined City Government it took on many new responsibilities including providing services such as Parks & Recreation (now known as Public Services) Fire Department (now known as EMS), Water Commission (now known as WWW), Police Department (then called Harbor Patrol) and Schools district that included five schools: First Baptist Church Gymnasium (opened in 1903), Methodist Episcopal Church building (1905), Jackson School Annex Building erected 1915-16/17(Jackson High School opened in 1925), Third Avenue Elementary School built 1923-24/25(Stuart Elementary School opened in 1927). These days these services are provided by various departments withinmobilegovt including Public Services (Parks & Recreation), fire department ($1 million budget raise approved 2018), police department ($6 million budget increase approved 2018) .
