Gulfport is a city in Jackson County, Florida, United States. The population was 21,838 at the 2010 census. It is the town seat of Jackson County and part of the Jacksonville metropolitan area. Gulfport was incorporated on December 12, 1851 and named for Commodore James G. Gulf. The first post office in Gulfport was established on November 15, 1851. The village began to form around Fort Myers Roads which connected it with other villages in Jackson County. By 1865, there were over fifty hamlets within a radius of Fort Myers Roads including: Clearwater; Dunedin; Bay City; Fruitland; SpringHill; and Wiggins Beach. On January 1, 1886 the first store opened in Gulfport when Arent Haskins opened his store at 601 Main Street next to the present day bank building inside the current courthouse complex (built 1888). In 1906 When Mayor Wm Jernigan proposed that all properties east of US-1 be annexed into Garden City he included property west of US-1 as well as much of what is now Gulfport proper within his proposition but no action taken on it until 1917 whenlawmaker John Hargrave moved from Jacksonville to take up residence in Garden City and recommended annexation of much of what is now Gulfport proper to make it one municipality under Jacksonville rule
