Gulfport was founded in 1855 as a wharf on Pensacola Bay by John Davenport and others from what is now Pensacola, Alabama. The town grew rapidly after railroad construction began in 1887 and sugarcane production became a major industry. In 1902, Gulfport became an incorporated municipality with a mayor and three City Council members. Growth slowed during World War II but resumed following the war's end. During Hurricane Katrina's landfall on August 29th 2005, many businesses were completely destroyed or had serious damage (e.g., 60% of all homes were without power). As of September 2006 there have been over $160 million dollars worth of damage done to property within Gulfport proper alone – including significant losses to businesses that reopened after Katrina clearance efforts began weeks later.. Gulfport, Florida is a city in Bay County, Florida, United States. The population was 53,362 at the 2010 census. It is the second-largest city in Bay County and the fourth-largest city in Hardee County. The original Gulfport was founded by French colonists on the present day grounds of what is now downtown Gulfport. The town was named after a shipwreck off the coast of Louisiana which led to its founding. The first residents of Gulfport were French colonists who arrived in 1795 and began trading with Native Americans and Spanish settlers living along the Mississippi River. In 1824, a group of Englishmen from Liverpool landed on an island near Pensacola and established Fort Jefferson as part of a effort to secure control over that region during the Mexican–American War (1846-1848). Afterward, British traders became dominant in this area. In 1851, Isaac Newton Goodrich sold 500 acres (2 km²) of land on Mobile Bay to James Allyn Purdy for £5 per acre ($7 per km²). Purdy built a small community around his new settlement called Allynville on what is now First Street south of Third Avenue in Gulfport. By 1860, Allynville had become known as Jacksonville because it housed most of Jacksonville's government officials at that time. In 1865, American Civil War veteran General John Jumper purchased 640 acres (248 hectares) east of downtown Gulfport from banker Colston Brown for $3/acre ($4/km²). He renamed it Jacksonville Landing after General Nathan Bedford Forrest's Confederate army had blockaded Mobile Bay leading up to Battle Of Gettysburg two years earlier. During Reconstruction following Reconstruction Era America (1865-1913), Jackson Landing served as one of several black political powerhouses across much southern America due to its location and African American majorities among its early inhabitants In 1898, Fenton Dixon opened Gadsden Mills which processed cottonseed oil into kerosene for use by northern manufacturers before World War I started; he also produced flour for local restaurants and exported it abroad In 1925 Hurricane Hazel caused widespread damage throughout central Alabama including parts of Gulfport; Mayor Waddell reopened Gadsden Mills immediately afterward In 1941 radar equipment operator Harry Kromey transferred from Naval Air Station Pensacola to Naval Amphibious Base Pearl Harbor Hawaii where he developed radar detectors used aboard Navy ships during World War II; based on this work he invented civilian personal Radar Detection Equipment or “Pedo” while working at NAS Pearl Harbor In 1944 his company H&R Aviation developed Manned Maneuvering Unit or “MUM” technology being employed aboard USS Enterprise USS OsoCity Missoula San Diego Essex Class Light Cruiser USS Saratoga CVN 78 aircraft carrier
