AfterJackson's election, many army members arrived in town seeking military service and found work at local mills which grew rich off cotton exports during Reconstruction (1865-1877). Gulfport was founded in 1887 by J.B. Worth and P.M. Whipple as a small settlement on the Gulf of Mexico east of Mobile, Alabama.
