Gulfport was founded in 1821 by Captain John Gregg and his wife, Mary. The original site of Gulfport was on the present-day waterfront at the mouth of the Mississippi River. In 1827, Gregg donated land to the city for a public square. The first courthouse in Gulfport was built in 1830. The area around today's Main Street and Bay Street were developed as an early cotton plantation district. In 1855, Gulfport became one of Florida's Seminole Indian reservations. In 1865, Gulfport experienced its first tornado when a powerful windstorm struck the town. A second tornado touched down in 1870 and destroyed most of downtown. By 1900, damage from hurricanes had caused serious destruction throughout much of central Florida; however, no major damage occurred in Gulfport during that time period. In 1915, after years of planning and construction by Mayor Milt Bearden and City Manager Wylie Thompson, Jacksonville's Girard Field airfield was constructed just south of downtown on what is now Bay Street SW. At that time it was one of only two military airfields within earshot of Jacksonville (the other being Fort Myers Beach). After World War I ended there were significant growth opportunities for aviation inFlorida due to increased activity along the Interstate Highway System and new markets such as Miami and Tampa bay
The town of Gulfport was founded in 1821 by two brothers, John and Samuel Gulf. The first store in the town was built on the corner of High and Bay streets. By 1830, there were twenty-four stores in the town. In 1836, a post office was established in Gulfport with Elisha Giddings as the first postmaster. The population of Gulfport grew to over one thousand by 1850. In 1861, when Florida became a state, Gulfport became its capital. The city's growth slowed during the Civil War due to military concerns over Confederate forces stationed nearby. After the war, business boomed thanks to new transportation connections made available through railroads. By 1900, however, oil platforms had began growing in popularity and development within downtown caused prices for goods to increase rapidly; this led to a decline in activity within the city limits until World War II brought about an influx of jobs that revived downtown and helped keep the city afloat during its difficult times. Gulfport has experienced numerous waves of population growth throughout its history including three total censuses (1901–1904; 1931–1935; 1940). As recently as 2000, it had a population of just under fifty thousand residents.
