Gulfport is a city in Jackson County, Florida, United States. The population was 17,059 at the 2010 census. Gulfport has been a port of entry for Native Americans and Spanish traders for over two centuries. It became an American military center during World War II and now houses the Naval Air Station Jacksonville. The first Europeans to visit Gulfport were the Spanish in 1565. A natural harbor on Mobile Bay, Gulfport was founded by Frenchmen in 1699 as a trading post on the Mobile River. In 1802, Englishman James Kenedy built Fort Moseley here to protect his colony of Mobile from French attacks. The town rapidly grew into a major sea commerce center with shipping lines that extended southward to Pensacola and St Petersburg. In 1821, Samuel Davenport organized what would become the first professional football team in America when he formed the Jacksonville Jaguars (later known as the Jaguars) with some of his friends from their native England. After playing one season in London’s new Football Association league, Davenports team returned to Jacksonville for 1822 under new management including future NFL Hall-of-Famer Tom Landry and future President George Washington Carver’s son Orson Wright Carver III (). Another important early figure in Gulfport was Judge John Wirt who served as justice of the peace from 1824 until his death in 1827; Wirt is credited with helping lead development of local education and civic leaders such as Gideon Welles Woodbury (founder of First National Bank), Commodore John Watts ( founder of Watts Manufacturing Company) and Mayor Isaac Askins (19th century mayor). With its growing trade ties to Europe and Latin America, it wasn't until after World War II that Gulfport started becoming an important naval base with both aircraft carriers USS Enterprise (CVN-6) and USS Forrestal(CVN-8) being stationed here during World War II before finally shutting down following hostilities ended in 1945. Following World War II, many manufacturing companies moved out or were bought out by larger businesses such as GEICO insurance company which soon became one of largest employers within town limits; this led to increased retail employment which helped keep downtown pedestrian friendly through much of the 1970s through 1990s despite having very high rates for parking combined with limited public transportation options nearby especially for young people living Downtown who desired more amenities like grocery stores close by or school bus service available without waiting long periods for buses outside busy commercial areas like downtown . The late 1990s saw significant redevelopment taking place Downtown culminating with completion of Two Rivers Landing district – home to several large hotel/motels along I-10 Expansive Boulevard just east off US 1A near Gadsden Street – giving Downtown something approaching "a liveable" environment again unlike what had previously prevailed throughout most parts of town since at least the 1960s before then most Downtown streets upon exiting central business districts were often either one long mall named after that area or straight ahead Interstate 10 freeway access putting massive pressure on already scarce Streetscape Preservation funding so efforts have been made recently by various organizations working together including Central Florida Regional Renewal Authority aka CFRA – part funded by state legislature & created via legislation passed last year - specifically targeting Preservation funds & ability/funding given thru state Dept TRANSIT planning law making transit authority mandated entity responsible for assigning blocks within districtslimits towards revitalization purposes walking & biking paths established along major arterial streets providing connectivity alternatives between neighborhoods located near CBD while still preserving heavy industrial complexes etc."

Gulfport is a city in St. Augustine, Florida, United States, on the Gulf of Mexico. The population was 37,627 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Jacksonville-St. Johns County metropolitan area and forms part of the Florida State capital district. The area that became Gulfport was first settled by Muskogee Indians in the late 17th century. In 1811, Captain John Smith discovered what would become Gulfport when he sailed into the bay on his USS "Naugrim". The town was founded as a cabin community near wherepresent-day downtown stands today on August 3, 1814 by Commodore James Ross with seven other men under command of Rear Admiral David Hunter after they landed at Islamorada on July 12th and explored southeast Florida for Spain. In 1825, Captain John Fenton hired two Frenchmen to build him a wharf so he could trade with Mobile Bayou pirates who had bases in that region along Mobile River. A year later (1826), General Andrew Jackson's Expedition destroyed Spanish Fort San Felipe de Baracoa in Biloxi Bay and this opened up new opportunities for trade with Spanish New Mexico coastal villages such as Pensacola and Havana but also increased piracy around Biloxi Bay which made it difficult for traders to prosper commercially; accordingly, Fenton built another wharf about three miles inland from his original one. From this second wharf begins what became known as Old Fort Street which still runs through downtown today (it changed its name from Bank Street to Fort Street in 1904). In 1830 – originally known as East Point – an Indian trading post were established there by Major Nathanial Payne which grew into Signal Hill Post #2 (now NW First Avenue). Just east of Payne's Trading Post stood an old plantation house called "Hollywood" which served as a military depot during both World War I and II; it now houses US Naval Base George Higginson (formerly USS Forrestal) off NW Third Avenue across from City Hall Municipal Complex dating back to 1915 In 1840 King Charles IX granted land north of present day Gulfport to prominent local lawyer Benjamin Lawrance including 8 lots totaling 4 acres each south of Main Street between Govan Road and Uptown Drive; these Lots 1 & 2 remain undeveloped today within walking distance of Downtown GPTX office complex located just east/northeast of lot 1 cornering FM 965 & Government Boulevard extending northeasterly down Govan Road past old LOT 3 warehouse building currently used by GPTX private security services inside Lot 5 immediately adjacent udp cornicemovement between previous buildings prior lot 4 building prior lot 3 garage now used by GPTX public works departmentLot 6 remains undeveloped across street from lot 7 currently being leased for use as restaurant/nightclub connected by underground parking Garage extending northerly across alley connecting buildingslot 7&8 are currently being redeveloped into new luxury apartment towers featuring large infinity pool/spa enclosed terrace ownedby high end hotel chain Marriott Marquis directly across street
