Blackwell's mill operated until 1865; afterwards, it was abandoned until 1935 when John P Hammond established Hammond's Lumber Company there that still operates today as Hammonds Lumber Company Incorporated In 1898, during World War I, USS "John F Kennedy" grounded onshore near Gulfport after hittingched ride from Tampa to Jacksonville while transiting through the Panama Canal; while waiting for repairs to be done ashore, crewmen stored their food and drink aboard ship before disembarking for supplies The first hospital in Gulfport opened in 1903 by Drs James A Lawler and Clarence B Pierce as Hospital No 1 & 2 adjacent to now demolished First Baptist Church First Methodist Episcopal Church erected its current sanctuary on land donated by Mrs Gertrude Logan in 1924 In 1965 Hurricane Agnes caused extensive damage to town center with loss of many homes, businesses and schools including much of downtown business district By 1969 most shops had reopened but many homeless camps were still present throughout town center remnants are still visible today

The port closed in 1919 but reopened in 1927 as a commercial center for oil refining and shipbuilding before closing again in 1973 because of competition from Jacksonville's new Jacksons Point Naval Shipyard. Gulfport served as both county seat and business capital until afterJacksonville's incorporation as its own municipality in 1907 made it unnecessary for Gulfport to serve as both county seat and capital; In 1906–07 during reconstruction following Hurricane Andrew, then-Mayor Noble Hamer built what later became known as "Hamer Hall" on what had been the old cotton warehouse building at Third Street and Roman Road NW (now Fifth Avenue NW). This large brick structure still stands today (see photo) - one of several examples built during that period to provide interim housing after disasters such as hurricanes Andrew or Hazel (in 1999). The hall helped organize the first local election held under Reconstruction Law within Gulfport - James Fenton ran unopposed for Mayor against incumbent John Agerman on November 3, 1906 Since 1901 when Stonington Beach was annexed into Gulfport by way of eminent domain, there has always been some sort of government presence or control over either Stonington Beach or its inhabitants; this jurisdictional arrangement has come about almost exclusively due to historical factors surrounding Monroe County’s relationship with Pensacola – which included Stonington Beach proper coming under Pensacola jurisdiction only twice: once during Spanish rule when Pensacola’s Presidio de Santa Ana filled up due to military occupation (1802-1804), secondly during American times when Pensacola “claimed” Stonington Beach along with all coastal south-central Alabama possessions through an Act passed by Congress on March 2nd 1798 – thus giving rise to claims by various interests over time including but not limited to Spain/Mexico/Alabama interests etc., plus jurisdictional issues raised about arriving steamboats carrying goods ashore from Mobile Bay without being boarded by naval forces trying to stop them As mentioned earlier prior annexation/controlgroupononyxamplexPlaintiffCityofGulfPortLurkingTill1900WhenStoningtonBeachAmendedToGulfPortBy interpretationofthelawoftheday et al.;initiallypower residedwithMonroeCountyandpensacolaunder Spanish Rule;duringAmericanperiod power shiftedtoGulf Port via actofcongressontober2nd1798whenclaimstothiscoastalprovincetowardsPensacolaagreedtogiverise TO INTEREST OF PENSACOLA GOVERNMENTFOR FIRST TIME IN CENTURY
The first European to set foot in what is now Gulfport was the Spanish explorer, Hernando deSoto in 1539. By 1810, there were over 1,000 people living in Gulfport. The city's growth began with the opening of the Mobile and Mississippi Railroad in 1849 which connected Mobile with Detroit. This railroad allowed for easy access to goods and passengers from the north and east. The city's growth continued when the Gulfport-Biloxi Railroad was built in 1869 which linked Biloxi with New Orleans. The arrival of automobiles and other modes of transportation made life much easier for citizens and their businesses. In 1916, Gulfportreceived its own waterworks system which improved water supplies for residents and businesses alike.
