Gulfport is a city in Lee County, Florida, United States. The population was 1,695 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Jacksonville metropolitan area. Gulfport was founded on December 6, 1849 byename Cottonwood Bayou and named after the gulf of Mexico. The first post office in Gulfport was established on January 15, 1851. On May 5, 1860, the town was renamed for Commodore John C. Galveston who had helped to found Fort Myers with his brother James Galveston on November 11 of that year. The city's economy has been based largely on agriculture since its founding until recently when it became an important port for exports from Florida and the Caribbean Sea. The oil industry began to grow in the late 1990s as a result of new exploration and production in nearby Mobile Bayou and along the Mississippi River system. In recent years however some businesses have closed or relocated within Gulfport due to dwindling local demand for their goods or competition from larger cities such as Jacksonville or Tampa Bay. In addition to its downtown core which remains one of the most vibrant neighborhoods in all of Jacksonville, there are several other districts which include: Midtown (the business district), Heritage Hill (a historically Black neighborhood), Northshore (a mixed-use redevelopment project including luxury apartments and a large shopping mall), Shipyards Park (home to several museums including The American Museum of Natural History) andsouthside(a dense residential community).

In 1903, Samuel Colt died due to an illness which caused him to lose interest in making firearms entirely

Gulfport is a city in Bay County, Florida, United States. The population was 21,415 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Orlando–Kissimmee–Sanford metropolitan area. Gulfport has been a center of commerce and culture since its establishment in 1892 as a small town on the coast of Lake Okeechobee. The first permanent European settler in Gulfport was John Nicholson who arrived in 1892 and named it after his home port, London. Nicholson's family left England for Tampa Bay when he did and started trading goods from their sugar cane plantations near present-day Clearwater Beach, Florida. When the Panama Canal was completed in 1903, shipping traffic increased along the lake which led to new development around Clearwater Beach including Fort Myers (now Hillsborough), St Petersburg, and Jacksonville peninsula extending out into Indian River Lagoon. In 1907 Captain Alfred Sibelius founded JASCO Wharf & Dock Co., the first commercial dock company on Tampa Bay and one of the largest companies in America at that time with terminals at both Clearwater Beach and St Petersburg docks. In 1912 Captain Ernest Wohlcomer organized what became known as "The Gullah Coast" Africans who had worked on sugar plantations near Jacksonville during Reconstruction to provide labor for shipbuilding operations off TampaBay shorelines; this contribution to Gulfport's cultural identity is still felt today among Gullah descendants living throughout southeastern Florida By 1920 there were over 100 businesses operating out of downtown Gulfport with an annual payroll of $15 million In 1925 Mayor John Peele formed a committee to study Possible Locations for A Port within The City Of Gulfport And After much deliberation The Committee voted To Place At The Point Of Entry On Main Street And Harbor Front For Use As A Governmentai Station By The State Of Florida With Allontown As Its Core AreaASED THIS DID NOT Happen Because Of Opposition From Businesses Who Wanted Their Own Ports Within The City Limits
Gulfport was founded in 1837 as a small community on the Gulf of Mexico by American captains George Rogers Clark and James K. Polk. It became an important financial center for the region, and played a role in the development of both Florida and Texas.
