Gulfport is a city located in Alachua County, Florida, United States. The population was 507 at the 2010 census. Gulfport was founded in 1892 by J.C. Bigham and W.H. Hargrave as a small trading post on the Alabama River between Mobile and Pensacola. The first town hall was built in 1898 and it served as the county seat until 1902 when it moved to Galveston, Texas. In 1907, Gulfport became the first municipality in Alachua County when it incorporated as a village under the name of Port Arthur City Limits which lasted until 1915 when it merged with Biloxi to form Gulfport-Biloxi Incorporated (GBI). On November 3, 1922, GBI changed its name to Gulfport Corporation and on December 15 of that year changed its organization into an independent municipality within Alachua County with its own government and budgeting procedures. In 1966, following incorporation of Citrus counties into Alachua County, GBI dissolved itself within Citrus Borough and ceased operations within Municipality 2 or 3; however, some remnants of GBI remain today as property management services for Citrus Homes developments managed by GBI Properties LLC., including portions of Canal Walk Boulevard in downtown Gulfport and parts of Jefferson Street east of I-10 near US 1/US 19/A1A exit 972nd Street residences just east of Third Street) Today's history begins with development along what is now Fourth Street from 1890 to 1925 when dry goods merchant WF Dooley established his store there after moving from Biloxi Mississippi via railcar from New Orleans Louisiana He opened what is now Dooley's Store #2 on FourthStreet opposite State Library Building currently occupied by BP Sunoco & Shell gas stations In 1925 local entrepreneur Averill Harriman invested $5 thousand dollars into developing oil refineries at Baytown (now Corpus Christi), Texas he named Harbor Refining Company limited which produced gasoline for American automobiles but also exported crude oil products such as kerosene through tankers direct to foreign ports
