Gulfport is a city in Lee County, Florida, United States. The population was 21,651 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Jacksonville metropolitan area. It was founded on December 5, 1892 by brothers Carl and Edward Norton Gulfport. In 1907 the city became a county seat and it has since been renamed to Gulfport-Biloxi twice. Gulfport is known for its seafoods, including catfish, oysters, and shrimp; its marshes; and its shipbuilding industry which produces vessels such as steamboats and yachts. The early history of Gulfport can be traced back to two brothers who named themselves Carl Norton and Edward Gulfport after their father's death in 1892. While still in their twenties they approached Joplin Brothers with the idea of creating a town on Biloxi Bayou east of present day downtown Jacksonville because they saw that there was no development surrounding them on the peninsula. The Joplins were interested but unable to provide financial assistance so they offered their help instead with land purchase from Edwin Gadsden for $2 per acre (1/4 mile). When it became clear that construction would not commence until after World War I due to funding shortages from the US government due to wartime obligations, both brothers agreed to sell their interest in Biloxi Bayou Port Company Limited for $10 million (equivalent today to over $200 million). The company built wharves along the bayou providingloading facilities for goods coming into or leaving Jacksonville during this time period while also constructing several warehouses used today by various businesses throughout Jacksonville including Lowe's Home Improvement Center right next door where lumber once went up against brick walls before being sliced through - another indication of how much freight passed through this area during those days! On July 1st 1914 when US President Woodrow Wilson signed Executive Order 9102 giving all US departments jurisdiction over areas located within 3 miles of any port or seaport "the more important these ports may be", meaning alligator fishing grounds off Long Island Sound had previously been excluded from such jurisdictional control, Gulfport residents select as one of six planned cities within three miles of Miami – Fort Myers Beach included! This action paved way for what would become one of America’s most prosperous shipping communities with an ever-growing list of top1000 companies exporting products outsource giant Hanes Sporting Goods Incorporation headquarters moved here in 1978 becoming home ground across 4 floors now occupied by PGA Championship Golf event followed by Penske Automotive Group home office operations stopped here only 2 years later following bankruptcy filings some 15 years earlier – highly indicative given then current economic conditions! And yes we heard about THAT too folks back then…folks you needed our attention! On November 10th 1923 when Ford Motor Company opened its new plants located at 9000 NW First Street just northwest corner Third Avenue making it possible for local truck drivers directly transporting cars westbound on I-95 without going through Tampa International Airport status changed completely overnight!!! All trucking will now have to go thru MIA first….a major step forward huh? sorta like turning your backyard into a freeway really didn't it? well maybe not quite like turning your backyard into an airport but definitely something big happened here folks! After almost 60 years as a thriving community fullof people proudto call themselves “Gulfports” we come full circle feeling pretty good about ourselves everytime we take a look around these parts #humble beginnings make great endings
