Greenacres is a small town in Miami-Dade County, Florida, United States. The population was 7,859 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Miami–Dade Metropolitan Statistical Area. The name Greenacres may come from two connected trees – "Cedrus americana" and "Cedrus viminalis". The first tree was cut down in 1892 by A.H. Coulter to provide lumber for his farmstead; the second tree was cut down in 1935 by Mrs. Lillian Eppy for felling timber for her home. In 1878 they changed their name to Greenacres after Capt John Fenton’s plantation near West Palm Beach that they had passed through on their journey southward from Pensacola Bayou near Jacksonville Peninsula - about halfway between Tampa and Jupiter - where they were trading goods with Native American tribes before arriving in what is now Dade County on December 1st, 1763 aboard HMS Beagle under Lt Governor James Cook during his exploration of North America which culminated with his landfall at St Petersburg Bay almost 150 miles east of Mobile Bay on October 11th, 1770 while mapping & charting Australia’s eastern coast & Strait of Magellan which he named New South Wales after Captain James Cook’s eldest son Prince Phillip (later King George III). Greenacres is a town located in Monroe County, Florida, United States. The population was 2,827 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Jacksonville Metropolitan Statistical Area. The land that now Greenacres was first developed as part of what is now Monroe County by slaves who worked on plantations owned by the Plantation Owners and Managers Association (POMA). The town was founded in 1892 when James Daley purchased a tract of land east of Jacksonville for $7,500. At its peak during the 1920s and 1930s, Greenacres had a population of over 100 people. The townsite was laid out grid-style with streets running east-west and north-south. In 1933, after years of discussion among local officials, POMA agreed to sell its holdings in Greenacres to the state for $1 million cash plus an acreage parcel immediately adjacent to the town site for use as a state park. After World War II ended and many white veterans arrived in Florida looking for new homes, most black residents left or were forced out of their homes in response to integration policies implemented by then-Florida Governor Lawton Chiles. In 1948, following passage of the Civil Rights Act Amendments Act (42 U.S.C., §2000 et seq.), Greenacres became one of several townships within Monroe County specifically designated as African American areas under section 8(a) thereof; accordingly all blacks were required by law to register with county sheriff's department within five days upon moving into any township except those exempted pursuant to subsection (b), which applied only to whites living lawfully therein without interruption or interruption from negroes employed therein without direct discrimination or sabotage; Provided further that no such Negro must be employed more than two hours per day cleaning publicrooms or available for service during normal business hours; Any negro who shall not comply with this provision may be arrested and brought before a justiceofthepeace having jurisdiction over his place of residence at whose direction he shall appear before him without bond on charges either civil or criminal: Provided also that every citizen resident therein may vote said township election provided he presents evidence satisfactory thereto from either himself or an authorized witness: This act gave rise to much controversy because it prohibited most African Americans from owning property outside their own neighborhoods while still allowing them access to voting rights based on their race rather than purchase qualifications
