Many residents of today's Greenacres date back to pioneer days when it was founded by Captains John Witherspoon and David Dixon in 1837 as part of an effort to expand Florida’s boundaries beyond Spanish settlements into territory claimed by both Spain and America (the so-called “ Miami Purchase”). The two captains built a small fortification known as Fort Dixon which served as a trading post until 1846 when it burned down due to Indian attack; during that time it marks only the second time such an outpost had been destroyed by hostile Indians within American territorial limits (the first being Fort Walton Beach). After years of struggles against Seminole Indian raids throughout Polk County, Captain Dixon’s efforts led to creation in 1853 of what would become known as Polk County – one of America’s earliest county divisions with its own courthouse, jail cells (including an infamous “tiger catcher” cell), schoolhouse, Masonic Lodge #5 (later Temple University) and other vital public amenities enjoyed by contemporaries across Southeast Florida including St Petersburg proper where Captain Dixon once resided! Finally accomplished less than five decades after his initial plantingation – barely more than two miles from present day downtown Tampa – Captain Dixon is considered one our longest lasting pioneers hereabouts! Incorporating much earlier than other areas located along South Florida's Gulf Coast - likely due primarily toa lack thereof available white settlement potential at that location - Alachua County acquired title over portions adjacent eastward extending into present day Hillsborough County on November 3rd 1835 when 1st Baron de la Fayette purchased 4 square miles lying northwest cornering US 27 & NS 264 just Northwest cornering Flagler River directly west side extendinf thence taking possession for nonresidental purposes aforesaid2 Also included therein were Entirely new townssite called Wynwood 2nd Town Site Oakland Park & parts lying Eastshore Just West side extending northeasterly 6 miles 4 squares mile1 Including: *Spring Hill* *Dixonville* *Greenacres* *New Providence* * Miramar* *Lake City* *Tampa

In the early 20th century, there were also some sugar cane plantations in the area but these have since been converted into residential areas.
Greenacres was founded in 1884 by J.P. Green and his wife, Anna. The early years were a time of growth for the small town, as it became an important center for cotton production in the region. In 1916, Greenacres experienced its first tornado when a large branch line from Tampa was destroyed by a storm. The damage caused by the tornado led to the opening of a business office in Greenacres to help repair and rebuild the infrastructure.
