Greenacres is a census-designated place in Polk County, Florida, United States. The population was 1,812 at the 2010 census. The first settlers in Greenacres were white men who arrived in 1845 from Georgia and named it after their plantation in South Carolina. A post office was established at Greenacres on April 12, 1846, and remained in operation until March 3, 1957. In 1907 a community of blacks called "Cotton Grove" was established east of present-day Gladesboro but never developed beyond its own black community because white farmers objected to the presence of African Americans on their property. In 1927 a group of Germans organized by Captain Edward Kapp assigned German names to four townships (northwest corner of Clearwater River), which became known as "Greenacres." This name change did not survive World War II; during that time all German surnames were changed to Americanized forms. According to 2000 US Census data, 1,662 people lived within the borders of what is now Greenacres ZIP code: 33609. Of these residents 1% are Alaska Native or other minority groups; 2% are Hispanic or Latino; 84% identify as white alone or as one race/ethnicity among multiple races; and 7% are Asian or Pacific Islander only. In 2000 there also existed an unincorporated area located within ZIP code 33609 that included a small slice of current day Greenacres proper including parts of Spring Hill Drive and Gulfstream Boulevard; this area's resident population numbered 3772 (14% Latino) with most living near SpringHill Drive and Gulfstream Boulevard areas where they work or attend school outside their homes
