Greenacres is located in the central region of Florida, on the banks of the St Johns River. The town was founded in 1892 by a group of businessmen and farmers who needed to find a place to raise crops after being forced from their homes in Georgia by the American Civil War. The original greenacres were small plots of land that were used for growing cotton and other vegetables. In later years, 3,000 acres (1,200 hectares) of land were developed as a citrus industry. Today, Greenacres is an agricultural center with a population of around 10,000 people. The town has a large shopping mall and several schools including one Polytechnic School which provides training for scientist and engineers. The history of Greenacres goes back to 1892 when businessmen and farmers decided they needed a place to raise crops after being driven out of their homes by the American Civil War. They first built small plots of land on what is now known as Waterfront Drive near present day City Hall Park. This initial development was not very successful because it did not have enough space for all the people who wanted to grow crops. So in later years these entrepreneurs started developing 3,000 acre (1,200 hectare) tracts of land along the St John River into an orange industry which became very successful at this time. Today there are over 10,000 people living in Greenacres which makes it one of Florida’s most populous towns. The shopping mall is home to many local businesses including JCPenney (the largest store in town), Ford dealership, KFC restaurant and numerous pulp mills that supply paper products such as newsprint and insulation materials

In 1970, the McIntyre family sold their interest in Greenacres to Texas Citrus Growers Association (TCGA) for $1 million. TCGA continued to operate Greenacres until it closed its doors in 1992. The history of Greenacres can be traced back to 1892 when John A. McIntyre established himself as a citrus plantation owner on what is now known as eastern Florida's Orange Blossom Coast. The original McIntyre plantation consisted of 4,000 acres located near Pensacola Bay on Mobile River. From its inception, Greenacres operated under various names including: Fortunato Rancho de la Vega; La Hacienda de los Olivares; Cimarron Plantation; Villa Blanca y Negro; Misiones de la Vera Cruz; Aguas Buenas y Malecón; and Don Pedro'S Vineyard & Orchard Estate. In 1927, Mr. McIntyre transferred his interest in Fortunato Rancho de la Vega to his son-in-law Edward Ladd Smith who continued to run it as an agricultural cooperative until its sale to TCGA in 1970. Under TCGA management, Greenacres became one of America's leading producer/traders of oranges with annual production topping 1 million boxes throughout its years of operation (1970-1992). After closure by TCGA, Greenacres passed through several hands before ending up at the hands of local residents who restored it and reopened it as a tourist attraction in 1994 following renovations funded by private donations and grassroots effort led by Bob Chappell with support from foundations such as Ford Foundation and Rockefeller Brothers Fund
