This conflict saw a number of battles fought between the Seminoles and United States military forces. At one point, there were over 1,500 cannons located in what is now Sanford County. One of the earliest firearms used in connection with hunting and shooting at ranges was an early muzzleloader known as a “buzzard rifle” or Tennessee Rifle. The community may have been named after nearby tract of land which had been named "Green Acres".In 1933 a citrus orchard and farm were built within the boundaries of Greenacres. In 1936 a water tower with an American flag antenna surmounted by a green snake became the first public structure erected in Greenacres when it was completed by local contractor Harry Fenton. He also constructed two churches: First Baptist Church (1936) and Methodist Episcopal Church (1938). A fire destroyed both structures on October 3, 1938; however, they were rebuilt within weeks. One of their pastors at that time was J.D. Smith who would later become one of its most famous residents including being its first mayor from 1987 to 1995

Greenacres, Florida was founded in 1887 by developers J.B. Kendrick and W.H. King as a citrus plantation to provide the company's growers with quality fruit at a reasonable price. The Greenacres Plantation still stands today and is one of the most recognizable symbols of Florida history. The first mention of greenacres can be found in County Court records from 1887, when an agreement was made between J.B. Kendrick, Sr., and Wm H King for the purchase of two tracts of land measuring 137 acres (57 hectares). The land was located on what is now mile marker 519 on US-1 near present day Jacksonville and would eventually become known as Greenacres Plantation. The original site for Greenacres had been used for several years prior to its purchase by the company, likely due to its strategic location within a major citrus growing area at that time. The tract of land purchased by the company consisted of five bayous – each bounded by a different creek – which provided ample water resources for greenACRES' grapes plants while also providing cover from possible attack or theft by neighboring landowners during harvest season. Although earliest reference to greenACRES occurs in County Court records, it wasn't until 1899 that production began on the plantations' first crop - oranges - which were grown on adjacent plantations nearby under contract with local farmers before being SOLD to Greenacres Company employees at an early stage in their development! rapidly becoming one of Florida's premiere agricultural enterprises! In 1906, Hurricane Andrew destroyed much of Jacksonville during its rampage through America's southeast coast; however, GREENACRES remained operational throughout the storm despite loss of many crops and many workers...the greatest testament to their capabilities as a business!
