Greenacres is a small town in Polk County, Florida, United States. The population was 1,723 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Jacksonville metropolitan area. Greenacres is located on Indian River Road northeast of John F. Kennedy Airport and south of I-75 (exit 321). Greenacres began as a post office in 1907 and has since been renamed several times. Its name comes from the word "green" because of the many trees that dot its landscape. The original settlers were farmers who grew citrus fruit in their orchards and gardens. In 1933, they built a two-story school to serve their community while they awaited development around them. In 1957, Greenacres became an independent municipality with its own government and police force. That year, it also gained city rights from neighboring Jacksonville due to growing concerns about traffic congestion within Jacksonville itself caused by burgeoning growth within Polk County itself along I-75/ exit 321 (then called State Road 472). The city annexed portions of unincorporated areas east of I-75 that borders Clearwater Beach before finally annexing all of Clearwater Beach in 1978 following a referendum vote by residents there over annexation request from nearby Stonington Hills. In 1990, after becoming stateless under then Florida Statute 915A, Greenacres petitioned for incorporation into Jacksonville as per ordinance 916(a) which allows municipalities to ask for incorporation when they reach “a point where their local needs have been fully met through annexation by another municipality or other form of cooperation” On July 8th 1994 City Manager Bob Riggs presented the results of an election held on October 3rd1994 to Mayor Donnie Barnes who had just taken office after being elected mayoralty challenger in November 1993 against incumbent Rick Hindman Jr.. Mayor Barnes accepted incorporation without any discussion or debate; he stated that he knew what it would mean for the people living inside Greenacres limits but felt it was important for Jacksonville overall given its rapidly increasing population density which was causing problems for law enforcement and public services outside those limits For nearly three decades now – during which time much progress has been made to improve quality life hereabouts despite some challenges posed by rapid growth – citizens have celebrated both successes and failures like so many others hanging off Interstate 75 just north of town... Despite some challenges faced by this vibrant community as well as increased traffic congestion spurred largely by continued suburban expansion outspreading county boundaries; improvements have been made such as new parks across Main Street between US 27 & CR 620 &Old Hwy 82 just east side), more than doubling the size of our library (opened in 2006), elimination or greatly reducing vehicular noise levels near schools including 5th graders using BECOMEDY Drive until 2020 (& we are still working hard on getting music played at night!), installation Of A Parkade On Park Rd E Near HWY brand new restaurants started recently & much more!
Greenacres, Florida was founded in 1922 by Dr. J.D. Macready and Mr. H.N. Heflin as a citrus orchard on the Black River near Fort Myers Beach. The orchard became a major producer of oranges, grapefruit, tangerines, lemons and limes in the early days of the state's agriculture industry. In 1940, Greenacres was acquired by Citrus Research Corporation and began to produce research crops such as citrullus lanatus (citrullus lanatus watermelon), cauliflower mosaic virus (CaMV) seedstock and cottonseed oil for Monsanto Company LLC . In 1984, Citrus Research Corporation sold its interests in Greenacres to First Baptist Church of Fort Myers Beach for $8 million dollars which led to the development of a new campus for the church at what is now Indian Rocks Park . The church remains the largest landowner in the park today with over 20 acres . The high-quality fruit produced at Greenacres has been exported around the world and helped make Greenacres one of Florida's leading agricultural exports . In 2002, Citrus Research Corporation donated its Harvest Hills orange production facility adjacent to their original Oranges Campus to University ofCentral Florida (UCF) in order to help support UCF's Orange Studies program
