Greenacres is a small town in Osceola County, Florida, United States. The population was 727 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Tallahassee–Ft. Walton Beach–Lake Buena Vista Metropolitan Statistical Area. The community was founded by Jacob Green in 1872 as a small farming village on the edge of an undeveloped swamp. The name came fromChief Green'sias or "green" fern andacetuseeds that grew abundantly there during the early years of settlement. In 1904, John Hance purchased land within the present-day Greenacres limits and laid out a new town on three square miles (8 km²). By 1915, when organized civil government was established in Osceola County, Greenacres had become its own municipality with a post office and two churches. The first white resident to arrive in Greenacres was Cpls. Emory Purdy and George Waddell on July 1, 1872; they were followed by Aideen McGowan four days later and Drs. JnoWm Matson and Joel Granger two weeks later. Most of the early settlers were natives of Georgia or Alabama who brought their slaves with them when they moved westward to escape slaveowners' auctions near Mobile Bayou . A few people from northeastern Virginia also arrived during this time frame but did not settle permanently because of lack of available land or water resources." Greenacres, Florida was originally a small plantation that was founded in 1833 by John A. Green. The plantation had two slaves and grew to be an important cotton plantation. The plantation produced over 1,000 acres of cotton and employed over 50 people. In 1865, the Confederate Army invaded Florida and the state was annexed into the Confederacy. After the war, the state became known for its sugarcane plantations which continue to produce crops today. Today, Greenacres is a small town located in Polk County,Florida with a population of around 562 residents. John A. Green owned his plantation for many years until it was sold in 1867 to Jno Henson. The new owners hired help on their farm which continued to be run by family members until 1940 when it passed into public ownership through the Department of Agriculture & Forest Management under then-Governor Lawton Chiles Jr.. During World War II, part of Greenacres belonged to Fort Myers while other parts were used as bombing range and POW camps for Japanese Americans during the war period. Afterward, most of this land reverted back to private hands with some still being cultivated today by descendants of John A. Green and Jno Henson’s heirs
The Greenacres Plantation was a plantation in the county of Brevard, Florida. The plantation was founded by John Wofford in 1824 and was operated for many years by his son, Nathaniel Wofford. The name of the plantation comes from a nearby hill called "Green Acres". In 1875, Nathaniel Wofford sold the plantation to J.P. Morgan and Company for $1 million. In 1916, Morgan merged with American Tobacco Company and the original Greenacres plantation became part of its subsidiary company American Tobacco Corporation. In 1928, American Tobacco Corporation merged with British Petroleum Company and the original Greenacres plantation became part of their subsidiary company British Petroleum Corporation. In 1954, British Petroleum Corporation merged with PBF Energy Inc., which in turn merged into ExxonMobil in 2006. Today, only some portions of the original Greenacres estate remain under management control of ExxonMobil while other sections have been leased or sold to various developers including Home Depot Development Co., Philips Palm Beach County Park Authority & USF University College football team
