Greenacres is a census-designated place located in Miami-Dade County, Florida, United States. The population was 5,869 at the 2010 census. It extends into Miami-Dade County to portions of Kendall and Broward Counties. The area now known as Greenacres was part of what is now Flagler County. On February 14, 1836, James K. Polk announced that he would be running for President and called for a convention to be held in Tallahassee to nominate candidates. Polk's call inspired James Swayne (1815-1876), an American lawyer and politician from Stonington Township in Monroe County who had opposed Polk's candidacy, to start a petition campaign calling for the creation of a new county within the state named after him - "Swayne's county" would eventually become Palm Beach County. When it became clear that John Quincy Adams would not run for re-election in 1844 and John Tyler would not run against Adams, Polk decided to run again and nominated Andrew Johnson instead. After winning the election on November 3, 1845, Polk traveled to Tampa Bay where he met with General Henry Halleck about creating a military brigade in order to quash any uprisings during his term as President - this proposal never came to fruition due to political instability during the post-Civil War era. Greenacres began development around 1870 when developers started arriving from Jacksonville looking for land near Fort Myers by the sea; they were followed by other entrepreneurs such as Averil Harriman who founded Miamisburg Steel Company on Indian Scout Boulevard near Uptown Mall in 1925; Harriman also developed adjacent areas which are now called Overtown and Downtown Miami Beach respectively. At that time it had a population of just over 21,000 people and its primary focus remained as an agricultural community with crops such as cotton (to be processed into fiber), citrus fruit (trees raised for oranges), strawberries (for export), cornmeal (used in baking goods) and other products grown on its property. However, due to increasing affluence within Palm Beach County as well as throughout Broward County overall since World War II; some businesses closed down or relocated within Palm Beach County while others began expanding outside of Palm Beach County altogether because there were more opportunities available in South Florida than ever before thanks to post-World War II development policies formulated by then-Governor Chiles Sr..
